Amica is one of the best auto insurance companies and our top pick for customer satisfaction. The company stands out for its customer service, both online self-service and with live customer service representatives. For a company that’s over 115 years old — the oldest mutual insurer in the U.S. — I’m impressed with how it’s kept up with the times. While I’m not a customer, it seems that Amica’s customer satisfaction scores are the real deal. Amica isn’t the cheapest auto insurer out there, but with a policy from Amica, you might actually get what you pay for.

Quick Look: Amica Pros and Cons

Amica is a mutual insurer, meaning its policyholders own the company. You can invest in a traditional or dividend policy. The dividend policy is more expensive upfront, but it returns a portion of your annual premium (5 to 20 percent) to you. That said, the dividend is not guaranteed, so it depends on your personal risk analysis.

Pros

  • High customer service ratings

  • Loyalty discounts

  • Rideshare/gig worker coverage

Cons

  • Discontinuing 12-month policies

  • No low-mileage option

  • Higher-than-average premiums

Who Is Amica Auto Insurance Best For?

If you’re looking for time-honored, high-quality customer service, get a quote from Amica. Its customer satisfaction ratings are really impressive, and its website seems pretty easy to navigate if you don’t want to talk to a real person for your customer service.

Some of Amica’s best discounts are for bundling, insuring multiple vehicles, and drivers under 30 whose parents have had an Amica auto policy for at least five years. Amica also provides pretty thorough safe driving discounts and more than standard coverage for gig workers like delivery and rideshare drivers.

Amica is available in all states except Hawaii.

How Much Does Amica Car Insurance Cost?

Of the major auto insurers, Amica’s rates are the third highest, behind Allstate and Farmers. The average annual premium for a full coverage policy is $2,283 versus the national average of $1,924. Minimum coverage averages $854 versus a national average of $547.

If you want the absolute cheapest auto insurance possible, you can probably stop here; Amica isn’t for you. That being said, I think the cost may be worth it for the customer service offerings I’ll detail below.

Company Average annual premium for full coverage Average annual premium for minimum coverage
National average $1,924 $547
AAA $2,211 $894
Allstate $2,639 $597
American Family $1,785 $713
Amica $2,283 $854
Erie $1,495 $483
Farmers $2,320 $634
GEICO $1,572 $413
Nationwide $1,805 $613
Progressive $1,891 $481
State Farm $1,697 $482

My Experience Getting a Quote From Amica

TL;DR: Amica’s online quote system is quick, easy, and thorough.

Get your Amica quote

After I enter my ZIP code in Amica’s online quote tool, the next page asks whether I’d like to bundle my home or renters insurance. My renters insurance currently lives with Allstate, but who knows — maybe I’ll get a better deal with Amica. So, I check that I’d like to bundle auto and renters insurance.

Questions to get an Amica quote

I appreciate that Amica has a clear disclaimer that it will use the information I provide only for the purpose of providing a quote. Seeing that made me feel better about entering my personal information. I provided my address and hit “Start My Quote.”

The first thing Amica wants to know after that is if I’m already a customer. After that, I fill in my name, address, date of birth, and contact information. Amica asks me a bunch of demographic questions on the following screen, including:

  • Gender
  • Marital status
  • What age I received my driver’s license
  • If I am a member of the military
  • If I’ve completed a state approved defensive driver or accident prevention course in the last three years

Amica Information and Privacy Disclosure

Some of these inform my premium; others relate to the above list of discounts. If you are insuring multiple drivers, you need to answer the questions for each one. Next, I fill in information about my vehicle, including:

  • Car year/make/model/body style (can also just enter VIN)
  • What year I got the vehicle
  • If the vehicle was new or used when I purchased it
  • If the vehicle was gifted/leased/purchased
  • What I use the vehicle for (personal, commute to work, business)
  • Vehicle anti-theft system

Amica reasons for vehicle

As for driving history, there are only three questions in this section. Amica wants to know if I have:

  • Had an accident regardless of fault in the last three years
  • Had any moving violations in the last three years
  • Had any other auto claims besides glass or towing in the last five years

Amica claims history

The last two sections have me filling in information about my current insurance policy and information about discounts I might qualify for.

JUST SO YOU KNOW:

Amica quotes are valid for only 30 days. This is typical of auto insurance quotes, as market conditions can change a lot in a month.

What Types of Auto Insurance Coverage Does Amica Offer?

Amica offers all the coverages a state may require, including:

  • Bodily injury liability
  • Property damage liability
  • Medical payments/personal injury protection (PIP)
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage

It also offers the following nice-to-haves if you need extra protection (in my experience, more is more when it comes to auto insurance coverage):

  • Collision: Covers accident-related repairs, towing, and vehicle replacement regardless of who is at fault (even if it’s a tree)
  • Comprehensive: Covers damage that isn’t a result of a collision with another vehicle or object; for example, fire, hurricane, earthquake, flood, theft, or damage from animals
  • Gap or loan/lease coverage: Pays the difference between the current value of your vehicle (accounting for vehicle depreciation) and the remaining amount on your loan or lease in the event of a total loss
  • Full glass coverage: Covers repairs or replacements to windshield, windows, and other auto glass, with no deductible
  • Roadside assistance: 24/7 coverage for towing, flat tires, jump-starts, gas deliveries, lock-outs, and more
  • Rental reimbursement: Pays for transportation costs, including rental cars, ridesharing, and public transportation, if your car is in the shop for a covered loss

FYI:

Only two states have no auto insurance requirement. Unless you live in New Hampshire or Virginia, you’ll need at least liability coverage to be road legal.

Amica: Customer Satisfaction Data

Amica has some of the most promising customer satisfaction data I’ve seen in the years I’ve been researching the auto insurance industry. Its NAIC complaint ratio (an index that determines whether a company’s number of complaints is more or less than expected) for private passengers is 0.73, which means Amica receives 27 percent fewer complaints than expected in the market.

The company ranked 12th out of 88 companies on the CRASH Network’s 2024 Insurer Report Card Honor Roll, making it one of just 25 auto insurers to earn an overall grade of B or higher. CRASH Network surveys collision repair shops nationally on their experience with insurers for repairs and customer service. Amica earned a B+, or 888, an improvement from 2023. It also ranked first in the New England and Rocky Mountains regions. Below are Amica’s grades by region:

Region Amica 2024 CRASH Network grade1
New England* A
Texas A-
Rocky Mountains* B+
California B
Great Lakes B
South B
Northeast B-

* Ranked first in the region

Amica also received the second-highest overall customer satisfaction ranking in New England from J.D. Power’s 2023 Auto Insurance Study — only three points behind first place. Amica previously held the top spot in the region for 10 consecutive years. My guess for its slightly lower ranking is increased premiums, which isn’t a problem exclusive to Amica. Personally, I’m counting this as a win for New Englanders who want to do business with Amica.

Category Amica score

Filing a Claim With Amica

Before I take you through Amica’s online claims center, let’s recap the third-party data available on claims satisfaction:

  • Amica received an A+ (superior) rating regarding financial stability from AM Best, meaning it has a “superior” ability to meet financial obligations.5 A good rating from AM Best is the bare minimum for me; it says the company is solvent and has money in the bank.
  • Amica scored 909 (out of 1,000) on the 2023 J.D. Power U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, ranking highest in overall customer satisfaction for the second consecutive year. The study is based on responses from 9,659 insurance customers who settled a claim within the past nine months. I like that the study has a large sample size and recent criteria; it seems like this is a good indicator of the claims experience overall.

Because I am not an Amica customer, I cannot personally vouch for the claims process from beginning to end; however, here’s what I’ve learned about Amica’s claims process:

  • Amica customers can file a claim online by logging into their account or chatting with live customer service representatives. They are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET, and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. ET.
  • Non-Amica customers can report a claim with an Amica customer and upload files related to the claim online as well.
  • Amica’s auto claims reporting hotline is 800-242-6422.

Amica report or track a claim online

Amica report a claim by phone

In order to file a claim after an accident, you should try to gather the following information:

  • Names and addresses of individuals involved
  • Accident location
  • Make, model, and plate number of cars involved
  • Names of witnesses and any injured persons
  • A police report (required for certain losses)

FYI:

Amica’s website says it will make payment within two days of receiving the necessary information and documentation on a claim. It can also pay partnering repair shops directly. From a customer standpoint, this is ideal.

Amica’s Website and Mobile App

Here’s the lowdown on Amica’s mobile app. You can:

  • Pay your bills
  • Manage claims
  • Access your policy and auto insurance card
  • Call roadside assistance
  • Get a quote
  • Contact customer service

Amica scored 4.8 out of 5 stars on the Apple App Store, which is pretty impressive. Reviews say it has an easy-to-navigate interface but could be better optimized for iPad. A lot of the reviews are generally positive about the insurance, which is nice to see. I also like that Amica responds to all of its reviews; that bodes well for customer service overall.

Google Play users report a very different experience. Recent reviews say they have had trouble logging in and wish they could make policy changes on the app (this is true of both Apple and Android devices).

StreetSmart by Amica is the company’s telematics driving performance app. Many companies offer this type of program to reward safe drivers, but they tend to be glitchy. It’s heartening to see a 5-star review from three days ago on the App Store titled “Hands down the best driving app” that notes the app accounts for real-life driving scenarios and tracks realistic parameters.

App Rating (out of 5)
Amica iPhone — 4.8 stars

Android — 3.4 stars

StreetSmart by Amica iPhone — 4.6 stars

Android — 4.3 stars

Methodology: How We Review Insurance Companies

Here’s how I assessed Amica for this review:

  1. Pricing and coverage: I researched average prices for different types of coverage and driver demographics, then assessed Amica’s discount offerings through its website.
  2. Customer service: I used third-party reviews and ratings to build a fuller picture of Amica’s customer service after I went through its online quote system.
  3. Claims process: Because I am not an Amica customer, I evaluated its claims process through third-party data and customer reviews.
  4. Industry ratings and reviews: I used data from independent agencies to assess customer satisfaction. J.D. Power and the NAIC are two great sources for ratings and reviews.
  5. Digital tools: As a smartphone addict, I made sure to check out how users rated Amica’s mobile app and to assess its online tools.
