Wondering whether you need insurance to own or lease an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) or utility task vehicle (UTV)? The answer to that question will depend largely on where you live, what time of day you want to ride your ATV, and where you want to ride your ATV, such as private property, public parks, or highways.
Regardless of your local and state laws or where you intend on riding, we recommend getting coverage for your ATV. Like standard vehicles, ATVs are more expensive than they were before the pandemic, and they can lead to costly (and dangerous) accidents. ATV/UTV insurance can help protect you, your vehicle, and those around you in the event of an accident.

Benefits for Experienced and Older Riders
If you’re an experienced or senior rider, there are a few ways to bring your costs down and take advantage of experienced-rider perks. You can earn a discount specifically for being an experienced rider. Depending on where you live, you may have access to a GEICO Prime Time contract. A Prime Time contract guarantees insurance renewal to older Americans and opens you up to new discounts.
To qualify for a Prime Time contract, you must:
- Be at least 50 years old
- Have no other ATV operators under the age of 25 in your policy
- Have no violations or accidents in the past three years
- Not use your ATV for business purposes
Discounts, eligibility and rates will vary from state to state, so be sure to speak to an agent about what a Prime Time contract can do for you.
Flexible Payment Options
GEICO makes paying for your ATV easier than ever by allowing you to pay your bills at your own pace. You can pay for your insurance:
- All at once
- Through monthly installments
- Through four-month installments
- Through six-month installments
- Through nine-month installments
Although GEICO doesn’t offer any pay-at-once discounts, you can still save money by paying your bills in fewer installments. Each payment comes with installment fee charges, so the fewer payments you make, the fewer times you’ll be charged.
Easy Claims Management
GEICO’s award-winning mobile app and web portal make managing, following, and updating your ATV claims easier than ever. Go to GEICO.com or download the mobile app to report a claim, upload photos of damages, and check the status of past claims.
Not only will you get an intuitive and sleek mobile interface, but you’ll also get one of the most well-reviewed and awarded platforms in the auto insurance industry. GEICO Mobile has a 4.6 rating on the Google Play store and a 4.8 rating from the App Store.

Nationwide is one of the largest auto insurance providers in the country and brings its reliability, excellent third-party ratings, and experience to ATV insurance.3 With Nationwide, you’ll get a number of coverage options, discounts, and perks to bolster your ATV plan, especially for riders with new ATVs. From a robust original equipment manufacturer (OEM) coverage and guaranteed repairs to riding association membership benefits, here’s everything you need to know about Nationwide’s ATV policies.
- Members of a qualified riding association
- Owners of new ATVs
- Homeowners
- People who own or lease ATVs (as opposed to renting or borrowing)
- People with a history of traffic violations
- People who don’t want to bundle other Nationwide policies
OEM Parts Replacements for New ATVs
OEM replacement benefits are especially important for owners with new ATVs. If your ATV gets damaged, some aftermarket parts (parts not made by the original manufacturer) may not fit your new vehicle perfectly. If you have a new make and model, you’ll have fewer options to find an aftermarket part that does fit with your ATV.
With Nationwide, you can rest easy knowing that your ATV will get repaired with new parts from your original manufacturer. If the original part isn’t available, then Nationwide will issue you a payment based on the fair market value of the new OEM part. Unlike most providers who limit OEM perks to one- or two-year-old ATVs, Nationwide will replace your OEM parts for vehicles up to 10 years old.

The best part? This benefit comes at no extra cost, regardless of your plan.
PRO TIP:
Are you looking for reliable gear at an affordable price? Try Partzilla or Rocky Mountain ATV/MC, two of the oldest and most reliable sellers in the ATV market.
Other Unique Coverage and Incentives for ATV Riders
On top of no-cost gear replacement, Safeco offers a few other unique benefits and coverage options that you may not find with other providers. Along with all of your basic liability, collision, comprehensive, and uninsured/underinsured protection, you can get:
- Guest passenger liability: Passenger liability covers medical expenses for an injured passenger while riding with you on your off-road vehicle. This doesn’t include spouses, who your medical coverage will cover automatically.
- ATV garage storage incentive: You can earn a discount just for storing your ATV in a garage or similar secure storage unit.
- OEM parts coverage: Get coverage for damaged parts for all ATVs with four or six wheels and a wide variety of UTVs.
24/7 Roadside Assistance
If your ATV is disabled within 100 feet of a public street or highway, you could call for the aid of 24/7 roadside assistance. A roadside service member will be there to help tow your ATV to the nearest qualified repair shop, refuel your vehicle, offer basic emergency services and more. Roadside assistance is an optional benefit that you can easily add to your plan by speaking to an agent.
Methodology
To identify the best insurance options for ATV (all-terrain vehicle) owners, we assessed companies on the following:
- Price (40%): We analyzed average costs for insuring ATVs, as well as discounts offered for safety courses, security devices, and rider experience. Using the latest industry research and our proprietary data, we identified companies that provide competitive rates tailored to the unique needs of ATV owners.
- Claims Handling (25%): We evaluated claims handling involving ATVs and off-road vehicles using independent sources like J.D. Power reports and CRASH Network’s Insurer Report card.
- Customer Experience (25%): We assessed the overall customer experience offered by insurance providers to ATV owners, leveraging third-party data from J.D. Power, the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
- Coverage Options (10%): We considered the availability of coverage options specifically beneficial for ATV owners, such as accessories coverage, passenger liability, and carried content to ensure adequate protection.
Frequently Asked Questions
For an ATV, you’ll need at least bodily injury liability and property damage coverage. However, we always recommend getting more than minimum coverage, especially since they are involved in nearly all off-highway vehicle accidents.
The minimum requirements for ATV insurance vary by state, especially since ATVs may not be legal to drive on streets in some states. For example, California, Florida, and Wisconsin don’t have specific mandates for ATV insurance. However, you may be required to get coverage for your ATV if you plan to drive in state parks.4
ATV and motorcycle insurance may or may not be the same, depending on your provider. Some insurance providers will include ATV insurance in motorcycle insurance plans, while others will have separate plans for ATVs and motorcycles.
Most home insurance covers ATV usage so long as you are riding your ATV on your own property. However, you don’t need insurance to ride on your own or someone else’s property (if they’ve given your permission to be there).
Most ATV insurance does not cover off-road racing or highway use. If your ATV meets your state’s requirements for standard highway use, you will need an auto insurance plan to ride on roads and highways.
No, most insurance providers do not cover all ATV types. Insurance providers might not cover your ATV if it has a non-standard number of wheels (three or eight wheels), a nitrous kit or other modifications. You can find out if your ATV is eligible for insurance by speaking with an agent or requesting a quote.
