Detailed List of the Best Auto Insurance for Toyotas

1. Best Auto Insurance for Toyota Overall - State Farm

What We Like Most:

  • Multiple discounts for safe driving, including one specifically for young drivers
  • Local agents
  • Discounts for multiple cars

We all know State Farm for its catchy slogan and classic commercials starring Jake from State Farm. But what makes it one of the most highly ranked, financially strong auto insurers?

State Farm’s century-long history of protecting drivers means it can offer reliable and affordable policies with extensive coverage options. As of December 2022, State Farm’s average annual premium is less than the yearly insurance rate of other auto insurance providers, at $1,419.

Many third-party reviewers rank State Farm highly. J.D. Power, for instance, rates State Farm 847 out of 1,000 in overall customer satisfaction.1 Overall, we find that Toyota owners find the most protective and dependable coverage from State Farm.

ProsWho It's Best For
  • pro
Safe drivers, especially those with three years of fault and violation-free driving
  • pro
Good students (grade averages of B or higher) and students studying at least 100 miles away from home
  • pro
People who value on-the-go policy management through mobile apps
ConsWho It's Not Best For
  • con
Military personnel (no discounts except for Louisiana residents)
  • con
    Federal employees (no discounts)

Steer Clear Program for Safe Driving

State Farm incentivizes safe driving with its Steer Clear program, which offers safe driving discounts of up to 30 percent for teen and young adult drivers. All drivers 25 years old and younger are eligible to participate in this program if they have three years of violation-free driving.

To begin, you can text SAVE to 42407 and download State Farm’s app, Drive Safe & Save, from the App Store or Google Play. You’ll complete driver-focused training modules through the app to learn and practice safe driving habits. Once you complete each of the five modules, you’ll drive a minimum of 10 trips while the app monitors your driving behaviors, such as how you accelerate and brake. Upon completion of the program, you’ll receive a certificate that State Farm will use to calculate your discount.

24/7 Roadside Assistance

Drive with confidence, knowing that State Farm’s emergency roadside assistance will protect you in the event of an emergency. If you add this coverage to your policy, call (877) 627-5757 or request help through the mobile app. Roadside assistance covers the following:

  • Mechanical labor at the breakdown site
  • Towing to the nearest repair location or a safe location (if your car breaks down on a public road)
  • Delivery of gas, oil, tires or batteries
  • Jump-starting
  • Repair labor
  • Locksmith services (if you lose your key or accidentally lock it inside your car)

NOTE:

State Farm only covers labor costs within the first hour of breakdowns.

Bundling Policies

In addition to its auto insurance, State Farm offers almost any type of insurance you’ll need, including homeowners’, renters’, condo, life and health insurance policies.

If you bundle your car insurance with a different kind of policy, such as home insurance, you may save up to $1,127. Bundling also simplifies your payment process as you will access all your policies in the same places: your online or mobile app-based State Farm account.

2. Best Auto Insurance for the Toyota Corolla - Allstate

What We Like Most:

  • Three ways to earn a student discount
  • Pay-per-mile option for drivers with low mileage
  • No waiting period to purchase accident forgiveness

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety lists the 2022 Toyota Corolla as a top safety pick of the year.2 So, we value companies like Allstate, which offers generous discounts to owners of vehicles with antitheft devices, antilock brakes and passive restraint systems. Such features come standard in all Toyota Corollas made after 2015. Additionally, all Toyotas made in 2018 and after come equipped with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), a package of advanced safety features like pre-collision systems, brake assist, pedestrian detection and lane departure alerts.3

Allstate began serving customers in 1931 and has provided excellent customer service consistently, demonstrated through its A+ BBB rating, which measures overall customer satisfaction. Between bundle savings, safe driving discounts and discounts for vehicles with top safety features, you may pay less with Allstate than all other providers.

ProsWho It's Best For
  • pro
Those who bundle their auto insurance with other Allstate policies
  • pro
New drivers, such as teen drivers
  • pro
Those with good driving records and no recent gaps in insurance coverage
  • pro
People who drive for ridesharing services
ConsWho It's Not Best For
  • con
Those who prefer to handle their insurance policies the old-fashioned way: through the mail
  • con
Drivers of vehicles not equipped with advanced safety features, such as precollision systems, automatic high beams and lane-departure alerts

Various Discounts

Beyond the savings you’ll receive from your Toyota Corolla’s advanced safety features, Allstate provides other discounts that may apply to you. Discounts vary by state, so be sure to check the Allstate website for updated discounts in your state. Some discounts include:

  • Safety features: Allstate offers discounts for vehicles with updated safety features like antilock brakes, antitheft devices and passive-restraint systems.
  • Payment: You can save on auto insurance if you pay your policy in full or opt for automatic withdrawals. Also, you can get a discount if you show that you’re a responsible payer by not receiving any cancellation notices for nonpayments in the past year.
  • Multiple policies: If you buy other forms of insurance with Allstate, such as its home or renters insurance, you’ll receive a bundle discount.
  • Smart student: All unmarried adults under the age of 25 can receive discounts for maintaining GPAs of 2.7 or higher or B- averages.
  • New car: You can qualify for discounts if you are the first owner of your car, if your car is a current model year or if your car is last year’s model.

NOTE:

Allstate no longer offers military/veteran discounts.

New Driver Protection

Less experienced drivers, such as newly licensed teens, are in good hands with Allstate. Allstate offers safeguards to put new drivers and their parents at ease, including:

  • Accident forgiveness: You can add accident forgiveness as an optional coverage to your policy, which prevents annual premiums from increasing if you cause an accident.
  • Drivewise: Young drivers accounted for 8 percent of all fatal crashes in the U.S. in 2019, despite making up only 5 percent of all licensed drivers.4 That’s why we love Allstate’s Drivewise safe driving program, which teaches safe driving habits and incentivizes drivers with rewards. Drivewise monitors driving behaviors and provides personalized insight into how to improve driving. We love this program for new drivers because, in addition to promoting safe driving, its crash detection feature enables drivers to call 911, request roadside assistance and file claims, all within a mobile app.
  • teenSMART training program: Allstate offers discounts to families whose teens complete the teenSMART driver education program. This program teaches safe driving skills to teen drivers through interactive computer-based lessons and parent-teen activities.5

New Car Replacement

One of the optional coverages Allstate offers is new car replacement coverage, which protects you in the event of unexpected accidents and totaled vehicles. Unlike many other providers’ policies, which cover only the depreciated value of your totaled car, Allstate’s policy covers the amount you need for a brand-new car. Your car must be two years old or newer to be eligible for coverage, which is why it’s an ideal add-on for new car owners.

3. Best Toyota Auto Insurance for Veterans/Military - USAA

What We Like Most:

  • Cheapest rates for teens on a family policy or on their own
  • Special discount for teens transitioning off their parents’ policy
  • Strong customer service and claims process

USAA started in 1922 when army officers in San Antonio, Texas, began insuring each other’s vehicles. By 2022, the company’s eligibility requirements included all people who have served in the military and their families, covering 13 million drivers across the country. Many people find the most competitive rates with USAA.

ProsWho It's Best For
  • pro
U.S. military members and veterans, plus their spouses and children
  • pro
    Those with safe driving histories
  • pro
Those who do not drive frequently

Those who put their cars in storage
ConsWho It's Not Best For

  • con

SafePilot Driving Program

Similar to State Farm’s Steer Clear program, USAA offers discounts through its mobile app with the SafePilot program. This optional behavior-based program lowers rates for safe drivers. Once you buy a policy with USAA, you can choose to download its mobile app through the App Store or Google Play store and enroll in the SafePilot program. By enrolling, you’ll receive the automatic 10 percent discount.

Once you begin driving and the app determines whether you’re the passenger or the driver, it’ll log your driving trips and calculate your “driving score” based on factors including:

Your driving score determines your discounts, which can be up to 30 percent off.

FYI:

You must drive at least 325 miles and 16 hours during each policy period to be eligible for a driving score and discount.

Noblr’s Usage-Based Insurance

USAA offers pay-as-you-drive insurance through its partner car insurance company Noblr, which it acquired in 2021.6 Noblr insurance caters to low-mileage drivers who wish to save based on how much they drive.

While the SafePilot app establishes your discount solely on how safely you drive, the Noblr app measures your mileage along with your driving behaviors to calculate your rate. Therefore, deployed military members and others who go for long periods without driving can earn savings with Noblr. Specifically, if you drive less than 8,000 miles a year, Noblr’s usage-based insurance may be right for you.

FYI:

As of January 2023, USAA’s Noblr insurance policies are available in select states, including Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia.

Overseas Insurance

If you are deployed away from your home and family or have to move for a permanent change of station (PCS), you’ll stay protected with USAA. Customers who relocate bases can choose to remain covered with USAA’s overseas auto insurance rather than cancel their policies.

With USAA’s overseas insurance coverage, you’ll maintain your basic auto coverages like liability insurance and personal injury protection while also saving on moving and storage expenses during your time away. Discounts on vehicle storage, for example, are available to all USAA customers except residents of Hawaii, North Carolina and Virginia. International coverage plans also differ depending on the country you are traveling to, so make sure to check USAA’s website to learn about a specific country’s requirements.

4. Best and Cheapest Insurer for Toyota - Liberty Mutual

What We Like Most:

  • Save up to 30 percent with driver monitoring program
  • Cheap average rates
  • Over 2,000 local agents throughout the U.S.

Liberty Mutual’s 100 years of experience places it among the most reliable insurance providers in the country. Between its wide array of available discounts and personalized coverage policies, we find it offers competitive rates for Toyota owners.

ProsWho It's Best For
  • pro
    Low-risk drivers

  • pro
People who appreciate flexible payment options
ConsWho It's Not Best For
  • con
Those with multiple serious driving offenses or violations

    Seniors (no discount)

Liberty Mutual Mobile App

You can download Liberty Mutual Mobile for free from Google Play or the App Store, which enables you to handle just about anything regarding your policy, all from your mobile device. With 4.7 out of five stars on the Google Play store and 4.8 out of five stars on the App Store, this app is an excellent resource for everything policy-related. Here’s a list of the available actions through the app:

  • File and manage claims
  • Request roadside assistance
  • Access ID cards
  • Manage existing policies
  • Add new policies
  • Pay your bill
  • Find safe driving discounts

Classic Car Coverage

If you drive a car that’s considered classic or antique, such as the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, which was discontinued in 2001, Liberty Mutual offers affordable and customizable protection plans. Classic car coverage can come in handy in the event of theft or accidents that damage difficult-to-find parts. Liberty Mutual will work with you to create a coverage plan that suits you, which we value since you’re likely driving your antique car on a limited basis.

It’s important to note that your vehicle must meet specific criteria, such as how old your car is (at least 25 years) and how often you drive it, to qualify for classic car insurance. You’ll want to contact a Liberty Mutual agent to determine whether it’s right for you.

Deductible Fund

The Liberty Mutual Deductible Fund is an optional program you can add to your existing Liberty Mutual policy. You’ll pay $30 a year as a part of yearly insurance premiums if you enroll. Liberty Mutual will contribute $70 to subtract $100 from your annual collision deductible.

As long as you pay into the program, your deductible will continue to decrease yearly. It renews automatically if you need to use your entire deductible fund for one claim.

So, you won’t be penalized for having a DUI or suspended license on your record.

Customizable Coverages

Acceptance Insurance has agents across each state it serves, so you can customize your plan based on your state’s requirements. All plans come with basic liability insurance to cover another driver’s expenses if you cause an accident. Depending on your needs and the minimum auto insurance requirements in your state, you can add other coverages, such as:

Methodology

We examine three specific components to choose the best auto insurance providers:

  • Company information: We research each company and its auto insurance policies, particularly its coverages, pricing, discounts and customer service. We also factor in financial strength and customer satisfaction ratings from trusted third parties, including AM Best, BBB, J.D. Power, Moody’s, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) and Standard and Poor’s (S&P) Global Ratings.
  • Proprietary data: During the past 20 years, AutoInsurance.com has collected substantial data surrounding customer experiences with different insurance providers. We use specific data points, such as a company’s demographics, transaction processes and claim processes, to identify top auto insurance providers. We analyze this data to determine which customers find the most success with which companies. Overall, we matched five top providers with Toyota owners the most.
  • Institutional knowledge: With over two decades of covering the auto insurance industry under our belt, our team has accumulated extensive institutional knowledge that helps us match customers with the right policies. Additionally, Centerfield (AutoInsurance.com’s parent company) serves more than 40 million customers looking for insurance services. We call on the expertise of Centerfield’s President of Insurance Services, Paul Ford, who has more than 30 years of experience working in the insurance industry at companies like Bankrate, Capital One Insurance Services and NetQuote.

Auto Insurance FAQs

How do I cancel gap insurance with Toyota?

  1. Within 30 days of your purchase, use the website contact form to cancel your gap insurance with Toyota: https://www.toyotaims.com/contact.
  2. You can also call (800) 255-8713. If you’re within that 30-day time period, you can get a full refund.

Are Toyotas expensive to insure?

Many factors influence the average rate of auto insurance, including your age, driving history, credit score and insurance provider. However, certain advanced safety features included in all Toyotas made after 2018, called Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), contribute to accident prevention and overall dependability, making them less expensive to insure than other vehicle brands. For example, a 2022 Honda Civic costs an annual average of $1,844 to insure, whereas the average price to insure a 2022 Toyota Prius is only $1,727.

How much is insurance for a Toyota Camry?

The average cost of insurance for a Toyota Camry is $1,500 per year or $125 a month. However, this price varies depending on many factors, such as the state you live in and your driving history.

What type of auto insurance should all Toyota vehicles have?

Most states legally require certain types of auto insurance, such as liability insurance, which covers the other party’s losses if you cause an accident. We recommend all Toyota owners have liability insurance, which includes:

  • Property damage liability: Property damage coverage pays for the other party’s property damage if you cause an accident.
  • Bodily injury liability: Bodily injury coverage covers the other party’s hospital bills, lost wages and funeral costs resulting from an accident you caused.

Since the above policies only cover the other party’s losses, you should also have coverages that pay for your own expenses, part of full coverage car insurance. We recommend all Toyota owners have the following insurance options, even if your state doesn’t require them:

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist: This type of insurance can cover you and your passengers’ bodily injuries and property damage that another driver with no or insufficient insurance caused.
  • Collision: Collision coverage is an optional policy that covers your property damage, regardless of fault.
  • Comprehensive: As another optional policy, comprehensive coverage covers damage to your vehicle from events other than collisions, such as theft, vandalization and weather-related incidents.
  • Personal injury protection (PIP): PIP is optional in some states and required in no-fault states like Delaware, Florida and Hawaii. This type of policy covers your medical expenses, lost wages and child care, regardless of fault. Each party pays for its own medical expenses.
  • Medical payments: Medical payments coverage is optional and pays for your medical expenses, such as ambulances and hospital care, for accidents you cause. You will also be responsible for the other party’s injuries.
