Travelers is a trusted name in the auto insurance world, and that’s no surprise, since it has been in business for more than 165 years. It offers a range of auto insurance coverage with policies customized to fit customer needs. Here, we’ll explain what you can expect to pay for auto coverage with Travelers, the company’s discounts and programs, and an overview of its history in the auto insurance industry.

Travelers Car Insurance Cost

The average annual premium at Travelers costs about $1,620. Keep in mind that many factors determine what you will pay for your premium, so you may pay less or more than the average. Here are the average premium costs for several situations:

  • Minimum coverage: The average annual cost of minimum coverage at Travelers is $1,290, which is below the national average of $1,463 per year.
  • Full coverage: Full coverage comes at an annual cost of $1,448. It includes collision coverage, personal injury protection, and comprehensive coverage, which leads to higher auto insurance rates than the minimum. Adding uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage will drive up rates even more.
  • Teen drivers: The cost of car insurance for teens is significantly higher than average because of their lack of experience on the road. Expect to pay an average of $4,845 a year for your teen driver’s Travelers insurance.
  • Young adult drivers: Fortunately, rates begin to drop for young adults in their mid-twenties to early thirties. The average annual premium for these drivers is $1,513.
  • Adult drivers: Annual premiums cost around $1,400 for drivers in their thirties to late fifties.
  • Older drivers: For drivers ages 60 and up, premiums cost an average of $1,188 per year.
  • One speeding ticket: At $1,826, Travelers’ cost for drivers with a speeding ticket on their records is below the national average of $1,911.
  • DUI: DUIs affect your premiums.1 Expect premiums to increase significantly with a DUI. Premiums with one DUI incident cost an average of $1,932 (still below the national average of $2,180).

If you have a teenage male under your premium, expect even higher prices. The national average auto cost to insure a male teenager is $7,188.

Company Background

Travelers was founded in 1864 in Hartford, Connecticut, when businessman James G. Batterson and banker James E. Bolter decided to pair up as business partners. It began as an accident insurance company when Baker, as a joke, asked Bolter how much it would cost to insure him for $5,000 in the case of his accidental death walking from the post office to his home.

The first concept of accident insurance would later evolve into the company offering several types of insurance coverage, including liability insurance for employers (workers’ compensation), aircraft liability, and accident policies for spaceflight and exploration. In addition,

Travelers was the first company to offer automobile insurance in 1897.

Besides being the first insurance company to offer auto insurance, this company was also the first to do the following:

  • 1971: Travelers revealed a toll-free number for customers and the general public to call for any insurance-related questions or concerns.
  • 2006: Travelers became the first company to offer a discount to customers with hybrid vehicles on their policies.
  • 2019: Travelers offered customers access to digital claims payments through PayPal.
