For full coverage auto insurance, Utah drivers pay $1,978 annually on average — 18 percent lower than the $2,399 national average. Minimum coverage, however, costs $1,006 per year on average, compared to the national average of $635.
In general, Utah’s auto insurance rates are close to national averages, with a few exceptions. For example, residents of Utah pay much higher premiums on average to insure teenage drivers, and there is only one insurance provider that consistently charges below the national average for minimum coverage (which, unfortunately for nonmilitary households, is USAA).

Utah has the lowest BAC threshold in the country — 0.05 percent (as opposed to 0.08 percent in most states). Having a DUI on your record can significantly raise your insurance premiums — by over 50 percent in Utah — but there are steps you can take to bring down premiums for auto insurance with a DUI, including shopping around and looking for discounts.
Progressive also beats out USAA when it comes to drivers with low credit. With Progressive, drivers in this category pay $2,433 per year on average, and with USAA, they pay $2,525 on average. The two insurance providers are the cheapest in the state for those with low credit, whereas other providers charge more than $3,000 per year on average.

In addition to price information, it’s important to consider how different insurers are likely to treat your case in the unfortunate event that you need to make a claim. Auto-Owners has some of the best customer satisfaction scores in Utah, excluding USAA, which is only available to the military community. It’s also worth noting that Farm Bureau is not included in J.D. Power’s surveys, but the company scores very high on CRASH Network’s Insurer Report Card.

Beyond driver characteristics and coverage amounts, insurance premiums are influenced by the policyholder’s specific location. The differences in cost between various locations generally reflect differences in accident frequency and in the costs of damages associated with those accidents.
In Utah, these differences are fairly small when compared to other states, meaning residents of the biggest cities don’t pay rates so far above the smaller ones. For example, West Valley, Salt Lake City, and West Jordan — all of which are close together within the greater Salt Lake City metropolitan area — have only slightly higher rates than the comparatively smaller Orem and Provo.
City | Annual Full Coverage | Monthly Full Coverage |
---|---|---|
West Valley City | $2,358 | $197 |
Salt Lake City | $2,229 | $186 |
West Jordan | $2,217 | $185 |

Utah’s minimum auto insurance requirements were increased as of January 1, 2025, and are now as follows:
We generally would not advise drivers that minimum coverage is sufficient. Nobody likes higher bills, but increasing your limits and adding comprehensive and collision coverage can protect you from much bigger expenses in the event of an accident.
Utah is a no-fault state, meaning each party’s insurance covers their own injuries in the event of an accident, regardless of fault. PIP coverage is there for that reason, and it could be a good idea to get more than the minimum amount for added protection.
If you’re eligible for USAA insurance, you will very likely find the lowest premiums there. If not, it really depends on your details and the level of coverage you want. Excluding USAA, the cheapest provider on average for each category we looked at is as follows:
Category | Provider | Average Annual Cost |
---|---|---|
Full Coverage | Nationwide | $1,336 |
Minimum Coverage | Auto-Owners | $702 |
Teen Drivers | GEICO | $4,637 |
Speeding Ticket | Auto-Owners | $1,579 |
At-fault Accident | Nationwide | $2,260 |
DUI | Progressive* | $1,795 |
Low Credit | Progressive* | $2,433 |
*Premiums in this category were lower than USAA on average
Legally, in Utah, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages are not required (although drivers must explicitly reject these coverages when buying a policy). Moreover, Utah has one of the lowest rates of uninsured motorists in the country. However, we would nevertheless recommend getting this coverage, as there are still around one in 15 drivers on the road in Utah who are completely uninsured, and there are many more who have coverage that might not cover all damages in a bad accident.
In Utah, at a minimum you need bodily injury liability with limits of $30,000 per person/$65,000 per accident, property damage liability with limits of $25,000 per accident, and personal injury protection (PIP) with limits of $3,000. The level of financial risk you’re willing to take is a personal decision, but we generally recommend full coverage regardless of where drivers live, possibly without comprehensive or collision coverages if you’re driving a fairly old/low-value vehicle that likely won’t be worth repairing.
USAA, for those eligible, is our pick for full coverage auto insurance in Utah. They have the lowest premiums on average and rank the highest in the regional J.D. Power customer satisfaction ranking. For those not eligible, either Nationwide or Auto-Owners are strong options, with the second- and third-lowest premiums and solid performances in the various service rankings.
We analyze average auto insurance premiums in Utah for full and minimum coverage for good drivers with good credit as well as other driver profiles, including teenagers and those with DUIs, accidents, and low credit. Full coverage averages use the following limits:
