American International Group, Inc., or AIG, is a finance and insurance corporation that operates in countries around the world. It offers various insurance products for both businesses and enterprises, and individuals and families. It is also the title sponsor of the AIG Women’s Open golf tournament.
It offers insurance to individuals and families through its Private Client Select business, which provides insurance solutions specifically for high-net-worth customers. Policy types include homeowners, auto, collections, yacht, excess liability, and equine.
AIG notes that its customer base includes almost 40 percent of the Forbes 400 Richest Americans, as well as owners of around 14,000 boats, including more than 200 mega yachts. It sells policies via a network of independent agents it calls Producers.
I’m a senior editor and analyst at AutoInsurance.com, and I’ve gathered industry research and data to help you in your insurance search and weigh whether AIG makes sense for you.

AIG Is Best for Those Who:
AIG Is Not Best for Those Who:
Pricing data for AIG is not widely available, but given that it’s tailored to high-net-worth individuals, you can expect to pay more than average. Its coverage options are incredibly customizable to your specific needs, so the cost will largely depend on the assets you’re insuring.
AIG offers complimentary personal assessments of potential customers’ current insurance coverage and risk management profiles to help them get a sense of where the company could offer value.
AIG does not list any discounts on its website, which makes sense as its objective is not to help policyholders save money but to protect their valuable assets. However, while it doesn’t offer the standard discounts you might expect from other auto insurers, it still evaluates risk, so the same money-saving best practices apply.
These include maintaining a clean driving record as well as a strong credit history. In addition, you can expect to pay less if you’re over 25. You may be eligible for savings if you bundle home and auto insurance (or home/auto and life insurance), but it’s best to consult an agent to confirm.
Given its specialized coverage offerings, AIG does not allow for online quotes, so I was not able to try out the process firsthand. AIG works with independent agents, or Producers, across the country to sell its insurance policies. You can use AIG’s website to find an agent near you who will be able to discuss your individual needs and tailor a policy accordingly.
AIG offers several coverage options that cater to its clientele. All of its policies include $1 million in liability coverage per occurrence, with the option to purchase additional umbrella liability coverage of up to $100 million. (Standard insurers typically offer umbrella coverage only up to $5 million.)
It also offers personal property coverage for belongings in a stolen or damaged car, emergency living expenses if your car needs repairs when you’re traveling, and pet coverage.
AIG allows for an unlimited number of vehicles to be covered under one policy, including standard cars, classic cars, motorcycles, motor homes, ATVs, golf carts, and more.
Here are other coverages offered by AIG, some of which are included in auto policies by default:
Coverage | What it covers |
---|---|
Worldwide coverage | AIG offers liability coverage if you’re in a car accident almost anywhere in the world (some countries may require buying additional local coverage). |
Agreed value | When setting up a policy, AIG will agree on a vehicle’s or vehicles’ value with the policyholder. If a vehicle is totaled, the policyholder will receive that agreed value as a payout, even if the value has depreciated. |
Rental Reimbursement | If your car is in the shop due to covered damage, you can rent a car of comparable value with no per-day limit. AIG will reimburse up to $12,500 in total expenses. |
New vehicle replacement | If your new car is totaled within three years, you can choose to receive a payout of the initially agreed-upon value, replace it with a car from the same make, model, and year, or get a new car of the same make and similar model. |
OEM coverage | If your car is damaged, AIG will pay for repairs using only original parts. |
Cash settlement | If your vehicle is damaged in a covered incident and would cost 50% or more of the agreed value to repair, you have the option to take an agreed value payout. |
In addition to insurance coverage, AIG also provides expert advice and resources to help you proactively protect your valuable assets.
AIG generally has very strong customer satisfaction ratings, which makes sense given its team’s expertise and the clients it caters to. As a high-end insurer, it is not included in J.D. Power’s studies along with standard insurers, but I looked to other data points to get a sense of its reputation among customers.
First off, AIG has an NAIC Complaint Index of 0.27, which is very low, indicating that it receives far fewer customer complaints than average. It also earned a spot on the CRASH Network’s Honor Roll with a score of B+, ranking ninth out of 97 insurers. These metrics indicate that its customer service experience is far above average.
In addition, it has an AM Best rating of A, which means that it is financially stable and can be trusted to pay out claims.
Category | AIG score |
---|---|
NAIC Complaint Index1 | 0.27 — fewer complaints than average |

To file a claim with AIG, you’ll need to make a phone call. You can either call your independent agent or AIG directly at the phone number on its website. There is also a separate number for customers who need to file a claim while traveling abroad. AIG does not allow for online or mobile claims filing.
The company advertises “an elevated claims experience,” which includes a single point of contact, connections with experts to help you restore rare items, and responses within 24 hours of filing a claim (with emergencies answered within the hour). AIG states that its experts go above and beyond, such as helping to source vintage auto parts from other parts of the world.
It aims to expedite claims as much as possible, but the time it takes will depend on the complexity of the situation. For example, if rare parts do need to be sourced, the claims process can take much longer.
AIG’s website is inviting and informative, but its functionality is limited. It makes the company’s target market clear with phrases such as, “The life you’ve built is distinctive. Your insurance should reflect that.”
The website provides information on the policies offered by AIG, as well as resources and advice for customers. It also includes the number to call to file a claim and a payment portal allowing policyholders to make a one-time payment or manage recurring payments.
I tried clicking on the login portal to see if there were more details on what features it provides to policyholders, but it actually links to the Producer Business Center, which can only be accessed by Producers (agents).
In addition, AIG does not currently have a mobile app for its auto insurance in the US. Instead, it relies on its agents to help customers with anything they may need. It previously had an app called On the Go, which was used for its telematics program, but it was discontinued as of December 2024.
Yes, AIG is a good insurance company in the sense that it has strong customer satisfaction ratings and offers unique coverage options for high-net-worth customers. However, good is subjective, and whether it’s the right fit for you will depend on the assets you need to insure and your preferences.
Yes, AIG offers auto insurance to individuals and families through its Private Client Select business.
Yes, AIG is trustworthy. It is a multinational company that operates worldwide, and it has strong financial stability ratings from third parties, meaning that it can be trusted to pay out legitimate claims.
AIG’s elite auto policies for high-net-worth drivers differ from other policies from standard insurers. They are designed to insure high-value assets — for example, they come with liability limits of $1 million. They also allow for multiple vehicle types to be insured under one policy, including everyday vehicles, classic and collector cars, and golf carts.
