Progressive and State Farm are two of the biggest names in insurance. In fact, State Farm is the largest insurance provider in the U.S., while Progressive is the second largest.1 As such, both are recognizable and reliable companies that can provide you with great policies for various types of insurance, including home and auto.
State Farm and Progressive are national insurers that write policies in nearly all 50 states and Washington, D.C., so no matter where you live in the country, you can evaluate quotes from both companies. However, if you’re trying to decide between the two, there are differences to consider.
Here’s a head-to-head comparison of Progressive and State Farm across key categories.
State Farm slightly edges out Progressive as the best overall car insurance provider according to our most recent data — it’s slightly cheaper (2%) and tends to fare better on satisfaction metrics published by third parties like J.D. Power.
However, Progressive may be better for specific circumstances, such as if you have a DUI on your record (4% cheaper) or have low credit (62% cheaper).
| Comparison | Progressive | State Farm |

| Average annual cost (full coverage) | $2,060 | $2,030 |

Cost is naturally one of the most important factors when you’re choosing an auto insurance company. In this category, State Farm comes out on top — but just barely — for drivers with clean records, speeding tickets, and accidents, as the company offers lower rates, on average, for standard full coverage. Progressive is cheaper for drivers with a DUI on their record or with low credit.
| Company | Progressive | State Farm | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full coverage | $2,060 ($172 monthly) | $2,030 ($169 monthly) | State Farm 2% cheaper |
| Minimum coverage | $702 ($59 monthly) | $650 ($54 monthly) | State Farm 8% cheaper |
| Teen drivers | $7,954 ($663 monthly) | $5,044 ($420 monthly) | State Farm 37% cheaper |
| 25-year-old drivers | $2,615 ($218 monthly) | $2,829 ($236 monthly) | Progressive 8% cheaper |
| Senior drivers | $1,789 ($149 monthly) | $2,078 ($173 monthly) | Progressive 14% cheaper |
| Speeding ticket | $2,631 ($219 monthly) | $2,062 ($172 monthly) | State Farm 21% cheaper |
| Accident | $3,048 ($254 monthly) | $2,972 ($248 monthly) | State Farm 2% cheaper |
| DUI | $2,816 ($235 monthly) | $2,947 ($246 monthly) | Progressive 4% cheaper |
| Low credit | $3,524 ($294 monthly) | $9,172 ($764 monthly) | Progressive 62% cheaper |
All of these rates are averages, so keep in mind that your quoted premiums may differ. It’s always wise to get rates from more than one company because a different one may be cheaper for your specific profile.
Having a violation on your record can make it harder to find car insurance coverage. Even though Progressive’s rates for a DUI are lower than State Farm’s, they’re still higher than rates for drivers with clean driving records. Drivers who are having trouble finding coverage should look at the best auto insurers for high-risk drivers.

Winner: State Farm — by a hair. State Farm is cheaper in five of nine driver categories, including teen drivers and those with speeding tickets; Progressive is significantly cheaper with poor credit. The two are virtually even for full coverage with a clean record and with an at-fault accident.
Both Progressive and State Farm offer the standard coverage options, including liability, comprehensive, collision, medical payments, personal injury protection, and uninsured/underinsured motorist.
Notably, State Farm does not offer accident forgiveness, which could be a dealbreaker if this is important to you
In addition, both offer optional add-on coverage options that can provide more robust financial protection based on your situation:
| Coverage | Progressive | State Farm | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roadside assistance | Yes | Yes | Covers towing and emergency help when your car breaks down unexpectedly. |
| Rental car reimbursement | Yes | Yes | Pays for a rental while your car is repaired after a covered claim. |

*Vehicle loans from State Farm Bank include Payoff Protector coverage, which is similar.
Winner: Progressive; but coverage options can vary by state, so always check your quote and talk with an agent to confirm what’s available in your area.
Both State Farm and Progressive offer various auto insurance discounts. These include common discounts, such as those for bundling different types of policies with one insurer, as well as teen-specific discounts, such as good-student discounts.
However, certain discounts are offered by only one of the two companies. So if you can benefit from these, it may affect your rate and, therefore, your choice of insurer. For example, only Progressive offers discounts for online quotes and paperless billing, so if you prefer to manage your policy online, this is a plus.
State Farm offers discounts for having certain safety features and/or anti-theft devices in your vehicle, however. So if you have a newer car, these discounts are worth investigating.
Below is a full list of the main discounts offered by both companies. Keep in mind that discounts vary by state, so always confirm what’s available where you live.
| Discount | Progressive | State Farm |

Winner: Progressive offers more discounts overall, but you may still get a better rate from State Farm depending on which specific discounts you’re eligible for, and other factors like your driving record.
In addition to their standard discounts, Progressive and State Farm offer telematics discount programs. Progressive has Snapshot, while State Farm has Drive Safe & Save and Steer Clear, the latter of which is specifically for new drivers. These programs use a Bluetooth or plug-in device that you put in your car, as well as the mobile app, to track your driving habits and reward you with a discount for good driving.
When you sign up for Drive Safe & Save, you can get a discount of 10 percent, and you may get up to 30 percent or more at your next renewal, depending on your state and driving habits. The program is not available in California, Massachusetts or Rhode Island.
Progressive doesn’t advertise the maximum percentage discount for Snapshot, but it claims that safe drivers save an average of $322 when they renew their policy and an average of $169 at sign-up. Snapshot is not available in California, and the sign-up discount is not offered in Hawaii or New York.
State Farm’s telematics program ranked slightly higher than Progressive’s in J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, with a score of 643 — which is also the average — compared with Progressive’s 628.4
| Category | Progressive Snapshot | State Farm Drive Safe & Save |
|---|---|---|
| Potential discount | $169 at sign-up, $322 at renewal (advertised average) | 10% at sign-up, 30% at renewal |
| Usage-based insurance satisfaction score (J.D. Power) | 628 out of 1,000 | 643 out of 1,000 |
State Farm’s telematics program will not raise your rates if it detects unsafe driving, but depending on your state, Progressive’s Snapshot may result in a rate increase. This is an important consideration before you decide to opt in to the program.
Winner: State Farm (no downside risk)
Overall, customers seem to be more satisfied with State Farm’s customer service than with Progressive’s. Here’s how they stack up in various customer experience areas.
In the 2025 J.D. Power U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, State Farm scored 716 out of 1,000, placing it eighth in the country and above the average of 700.5 Progressive, on the other hand, scored 673 out of 1,000, placing it 18th and below average.
However, in the 2025 CRASH Network Insurer Report Card, which tracks auto shops’ experiences dealing with insurers, Progressive received a slightly higher score than State Farm.

Winner: State Farm, particularly if you use an auto repair shop in the company’s direct repair program.
Meanwhile, J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, which measures overall customer satisfaction with insurers, ranked State Farm above average in every region. Meanwhile, Progressive ranked below average in every region except California.

In addition, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), a group that logs customer complaints against insurers, both companies receive more complaints than average, but State Farm fares slightly better. As of 2024, State Farm had an NAIC Complaint Index score of 2.46,6 while Progressive’s was 2.79.7 A score of 1 is considered the expected amount of complaints for a company in the market.

Winner: State Farm
When it comes to shopping around for and purchasing an insurance policy, customers are more satisfied with State Farm’s process than Progressive’s, on average. Both companies offer flexible options for getting a quote, including online and on the phone with an agent. However, only Progressive allows customers to purchase a policy online.
It’s notable, therefore, that State Farm ranked more highly for customer service in J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Insurance Shopping Study despite not offering the ease of online purchasing. It ranked third in the study, while Progressive ranked 14th.8 The study evaluates insurers on factors such as the policy offerings, price, quote process and distribution channel. Therefore, State Farm’s ranking suggests customers are satisfied with aspects such as pricing and availability of agents.

Both Progressive and State Farm are national insurers with good reputations overall. State Farm may be cheaper, on average, for most drivers, but you should always get quotes from both companies to compare, and at least one other company as well.
Households with teen drivers save an average of $2,910 annually with State Farm compared to Progressive. For senior drivers, the advantage flips, as they can save $289 per year by choosing Progressive.

Overall, State Farm fares better for customer service and claims handling, so if those are priorities for you, this is an important consideration to keep in mind. Both companies offer a variety of discounts that may affect your rate, depending on where you live and what you qualify for. Both also offer telematics programs, but only Progressive’s program could increase your rate; sign up only if you are confident in your safe driving habits.
When it comes down to it, if you’re considering either option and get a good rate, you’ll likely have a decent experience, and you can always switch providers if you’re unhappy.
On average, Progressive is slightly more expensive for drivers with clean records. However, for senior drivers and drivers with DUIs or poor credit, State Farm is the more expensive option, on average.
Yes, but make sure to sign up for your new policy before you cancel your old one, so you don’t end up with a gap in your coverage. Once the new policy is active, cancel your old policy by calling your insurer or agent and potentially signing a cancellation form.

Compared with State Farm, customers tend to be less satisfied with Progressive’s payouts. In the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, Progressive scored 672 out of 1,000, placing it 20th nationally for customer satisfaction, which is below average. Comparatively, State Farm scored 710 out of 1,000, placing it sixth — significantly higher and above average.
