Elephant Insurance is a relatively new insurance company founded in 2009. It is a U.S.-based offshoot of the U.K. insurance company Admiral Group, which operates various insurance brands in eight countries.
Elephant is headquartered in Virginia and now operates in seven other states: Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Maryland, Tennessee, and Texas. In addition to car insurance, it sells home, renters, motorcycle, condo, umbrella, ATV, pet, and life insurance policies. Its property and pet insurance policies are underwritten by Lemonade, while motorcycle policies are underwritten by Dairyland.
It advertises auto insurance at fair prices, with various discounts available to help policyholders save on their policies. The company also highlights corporate social responsibility practices, which include support of and partnerships with various nonprofit organizations, such as Project Yellow Light.
I’m a senior editor and analyst at AutoInsurance.com, and I’ve compiled industry research and data to walk you through Elephant’s key features and drawbacks and help you weigh if it could be a good option for you.

Elephant car insurance is ideal for drivers who prefer online purchasing, are seeking add-ons beyond standard coverage, and/or are looking to bundle auto with other policy types.
Elephant Is Best for Those Who:
Elephant Is Not Best for Those Who:
Pricing data for Elephant is not available, but the company advertises affordable rates for car insurance. If you have a clean record and other favorable factors, you will likely get a good rate. The company states on its website that drivers who switch to Elephant save an average of $805 annually.
Elephant advertises many car insurance discounts, which it states can save policyholders up to 40 percent on their policy:
Elephant sells several different types of insurance, including home, renters, condo, and life insurance, some of which are through a partnership with another insurance company. Elephant provides a discount for bundling auto with property insurance, life insurance, or both, even if one of the policies is underwritten by one of its partners.
Elephant offers up to 12 percent off for bundling auto and home, and up to 4 percent off if you bundle auto with life insurance.
Elephant’s work from home discount is a unique discount that saves you money based on the fact that you don’t have to drive to commute, and are therefore at a lower risk of accidents. The more days you work from home, the more you can save. This discount also applies if the spouse of the policyholder works from home.
Elephant also offers the following discounts:
Bundling discounts are usually one of the best discounts you can get, so if you’re getting an auto quote but also have an existing home or renters policy with another insurer, it’s worth getting quotes for both to see how much you could save.
Elephant provides an easy and user-friendly online quote and purchase process. It has a useful Coverage Wizard tool, which can help you determine what coverages you need before you begin your quote. It asks questions about your situation and makes recommendations for what coverage to include, along with helpful information.
You can see an example in the screenshot below, which is recommending that I get a full coverage policy based on my response to the previous question of whether I currently finance my car (I answered yes).
I wasn’t able to go through the quote process since Elephant is not available in my state, but you can complete the quote and finalize your policy entirely online if you wish to. You can also call the number on the screen at any time to speak with an agent if you have any questions.
When I entered a ZIP code outside of its service area, Elephant recommended that I get a quote with one of its partners — Progressive, Allstate, and Ultimate Insurance — and included direct links to their sites, which I thought was a nice touch.
Elephant offers a relatively wide range of coverages in addition to the standard options of liability, collision, comprehensive, medical payments, personal injury protection, and uninsured motorist coverage.
Here is a full list of the company’s coverage options beyond those listed above:
Coverage | What it covers |
---|---|
Loan/lease payoff | Also known as gap coverage, this will help pay for the difference between your car’s value and what you still owe on your loan if your car is totaled. |
Rental reimbursement | This covers the cost of a rental car if your car is damaged in an accident. |
Non-owner insurance | This provides coverage to drivers who don’t own a car but frequently borrow or rent cars. |
Custom parts and equipment coverage | Helps pay to repair or replace custom modifications on your car. |
Real-time roadside assistance | This covers roadside assistance services, including towing, battery jump start, tire change, and more. Elephant’s real-time service allows you to track the roadside service provider as they’re on their way to you. |
Legal coverage | Elephant’s Legal Resources plan can be added to your policy to cover attorney fees for one minor traffic violation per year. It also provides a 25 percent discount on other attorney services, like will preparation. |
Upgraded accident forgiveness | This can be added to your policy to get the benefits of accident forgiveness right away. Otherwise, Elephant adds it to your policy following three years without an accident. |
Diminishing deductible | This is available to policies with collision coverage with at least a $500 deductible. Elephant will lower your deductible for every policy term without an accident. |
Pet coverage | Pet injury coverage is automatically added to policies with collision coverage and covers up to $1,000 for vet bills and other related costs if your pet is injured in an accident. |
When it comes to customer service, Elephant’s ratings are mixed, but they lean positive. J.D. Power doesn’t include the company in its annual studies, so I looked at a few different sources instead.
On the negative-leaning side of things, Elephant has a rating of C- from CRASH Network, ranking below average at number 78 out of 97. That said, the major ten U.S. insurers also scored in this range.
Elephant also has an NAIC Complaint Index of 2.46, which means it receives 2.46 times more complaints than would be expected for a company of its size in the market. However, when I filtered for private passenger auto insurance complaints specifically, its score dropped to 0.94, meaning it receives slightly fewer complaints than average in this category.
On the positive side: Elephant has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau as well as a customer rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 1,000 reviews on Trustpilot, which indicates that many customers are very satisfied with the service they receive.
Elephant’s parent company, Admiral Group, also has an A+ rating from AM Best, meaning it is financially stable and is able to reliably pay out the claims it owes to policyholders.

Elephant makes it easy to file a claim. You can do so via the mobile app, website, or over the phone. When using the online portal, you can sign in to your account to speed up the process, or you can continue as a guest. If you continue as a guest, the next screen asks whether you’re filing a glass claim or another type of claim.
For all other claim types, you’ll be redirected to the following screen, where you’ll need to input your policy number, followed by all the details of the incident.
Once you complete the filing process, you will be contacted by an Elephant representative who will work with you to come to a settlement. You can check the status of your claim at any time by logging into your online account. The speed with which your claim is settled will depend on the complexity of the incident and damage.
Elephant has robust digital tools, including a user-friendly website and digital app. Its website has detailed information on all of its offerings as well as resources to help you find the right coverage. You can easily start a quote or log in to your existing account from the homepage.
I also downloaded the app to get a feel for it, and while I couldn’t access most features without logging in, the interface is clean and easy to use. When you first download the app, it greets you with several slides explaining the different features. From the app, you can view your ID cards, pay your bill, file a claim, and more.
You can swipe through, or you can log in or activate your account right away. You can also call roadside assistance without needing to log in.
The mobile app has decent ratings on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. However, many recent reviews complain that the app no longer lets them log in and crashes a lot.
App Version | Rating (out of 5) |
---|---|
iPhone (App Store) | 4.0 stars |
Android (Google Play) | 3.9 stars |
Elephant car insurance is a reputable and moderately highly-rated car insurance company that tends to offer affordable rates. How good it is will depend on your specific profile and preferences. It has a wide range of coverage options and discounts, as well as a strong financial stability rating, but it has mixed customer satisfaction ratings, so your experience may vary.
No, Elephant Insurance is not owned by Allstate. It’s owned by the U.K.-based Admiral Group.
Elephant car insurance may be cheap for various reasons. It offers many discounts, which can help keep rates low. In addition, premiums will depend on several factors, including your location, driving record, and more. If your rates are very cheap, it’s likely because you have a clean driving record and good credit, and live in an area with lower population density.
