Teachers do very important work but are often not adequately compensated. Many organizations and companies offer special discounts to educators, which can help alleviate some of the financial burden they face.
This extends to insurance companies, some of which partner with professional associations like teachers’ unions to offer discounts and other benefits to educators. These perks can be especially valuable as prices continue to rise and most wages are not keeping up with inflation.
Here’s what you need to know about how teachers’ unions can help you save on car insurance.
The main role of teachers’ unions is to advocate for higher salaries and better benefits for teachers. However, they also offer members other perks, like discounts on phone plans, car rentals, hotels, and even movies, as well as mortgage programs and assistance for job interruption.
In addition, they generally provide insurance benefits, including group discounts on home and auto policies. Options will be more limited if you choose to go through your union, but you could end up with a great deal that wouldn’t be available elsewhere.
Even if your teachers’ union provides access to group insurance discounts, it’s a good idea to get rates from other companies outside the group discount because they may still offer you a lower rate.
The National Education Association (NEA) partners with Travelers to offer its members a discount on auto insurance. It claims that members who switch to Travelers can save an average of $611.1 The Travelers partnership recently replaced the NEA’s partnership with California Casualty, after the company pulled out of many states. However, NEA discounts may still be available with California Casualty in select states.
California Casualty also partners with the California Teachers Association and the Arizona Education Association. In addition to discounted rates, it offers members benefits like a 12-month rate guarantee and a waived deductible if your car is hit or vandalized while you’re parked at school.
The American Federation of Teachers and the New York State United Teachers union both provide access to the Farmers Insurance Choice Marketplace, which offers discounted insurance rates from a variety of insurers, not just Farmers.
NYSUT also notes that members who purchase a Farmers GroupSelect auto, home, or renter’s policy receive access to identity protection services through Farmers’ service provider CyberScout at no extra cost.
Meanwhile, the Pennsylvania State Education Association offers members a direct-to-consumer insurance option through Liberty Mutual as well as a local agent option through Comparion Insurance Agency.
These are the perks offered by some of the biggest teachers’ unions in the country, but if you belong to a different one, be sure to check the member benefits as they will more than likely include insurance perks.
The way you access car insurance discounts through your teachers’ union is generally straightforward, but the exact process depends on your union.
If you have any questions or doubts, contact your union for support.
Several car insurers have teacher-specific discounts or affinity discounts that educators may be eligible for if they belong to certain alumni or professional associations.

There are also many other discounts offered by car insurance companies that teachers may be eligible for to save more on premiums:
Teachers’ unions provide aid and support to educators across the country, advocating for improved working conditions and better salaries. However, the benefits don’t stop there, as many also offer special programs and discounts to support teachers outside the classroom. These include car and home insurance discounts, which can help teachers save on these essential products. However, it’s still important to shop around with other auto insurance companies outside of union benefits as they may not always provide the absolute best deal available.
Allstate does not offer specific teacher discounts. However, it’s still worth considering as the rate you’re quoted depends on many factors. Allstate also has many discounts that teachers may be eligible for, including bundling, multi-vehicle, and new car discounts.
Government employees don’t automatically get discounts on car insurance, but certain companies, like GEICO, do have discounts for federal employees. Check with your insurer to see what discounts are available in your area.
Progressive does not currently have a teacher discount, but teachers can still take advantage of the company’s long list of other discounts. These include discounts for bundling policies, continuous insurance, and opting into paperless billing.
