Teachers do very important work but are often not adequately compensated. Many organizations and companies offer special discounts to educators, which can help alleviate some of the financial burden they face.

This extends to insurance companies, some of which partner with professional associations like teachers’ unions to offer discounts and other benefits to educators. These perks can be especially valuable as prices continue to rise and most wages are not keeping up with inflation.

Here’s what you need to know about how teachers’ unions can help you save on car insurance.

Car Insurance Discounts Offered Through Teachers’ Unions

The main role of teachers’ unions is to advocate for higher salaries and better benefits for teachers. However, they also offer members other perks, like discounts on phone plans, car rentals, hotels, and even movies, as well as mortgage programs and assistance for job interruption.

In addition, they generally provide insurance benefits, including group discounts on home and auto policies. Options will be more limited if you choose to go through your union, but you could end up with a great deal that wouldn’t be available elsewhere.

TIP:

Even if your teachers’ union provides access to group insurance discounts, it’s a good idea to get rates from other companies outside the group discount because they may still offer you a lower rate.

National Education Association (NEA)

The National Education Association (NEA) partners with Travelers to offer its members a discount on auto insurance. It claims that members who switch to Travelers can save an average of $611.1 The Travelers partnership recently replaced the NEA’s partnership with California Casualty, after the company pulled out of many states. However, NEA discounts may still be available with California Casualty in select states.

California Teachers Association and the Arizona Education Association

California Casualty also partners with the California Teachers Association and the Arizona Education Association. In addition to discounted rates, it offers members benefits like a 12-month rate guarantee and a waived deductible if your car is hit or vandalized while you’re parked at school.

American Federation of Teachers and New York State United Teachers

The American Federation of Teachers and the New York State United Teachers union both provide access to the Farmers Insurance Choice Marketplace, which offers discounted insurance rates from a variety of insurers, not just Farmers.

NYSUT also notes that members who purchase a Farmers GroupSelect auto, home, or renter’s policy receive access to identity protection services through Farmers’ service provider CyberScout at no extra cost.

Pennsylvania State Education Association

Meanwhile, the Pennsylvania State Education Association offers members a direct-to-consumer insurance option through Liberty Mutual as well as a local agent option through Comparion Insurance Agency.

These are the perks offered by some of the biggest teachers’ unions in the country, but if you belong to a different one, be sure to check the member benefits as they will more than likely include insurance perks.

How to Access Car Insurance Discounts Through Teachers’ Unions

The way you access car insurance discounts through your teachers’ union is generally straightforward, but the exact process depends on your union.

  1. For most associations, you simply need to go to their Member Benefits page and navigate to Insurance, then Home and Auto Insurance.
  2. Then, depending on the association, you may need to click “start quote,” or you may immediately be redirected to the appropriate partner insurance site where you can input your ZIP code to begin the quote process.

If you have any questions or doubts, contact your union for support.

Other Car Insurance Discounts for Educators

Several car insurers have teacher-specific discounts or affinity discounts that educators may be eligible for if they belong to certain alumni or professional associations.

The following are some of the companies offering discounts for teachers:

  • Country Financial: Occupation discount of up to 15 percent for full-time K-12 teachers
  • Farmers: Affinity discount for members of certain organizations
  • GEICO: Affinity discount for members of certain organizations
  • Horace Mann: Occupation discount for teachers; additional benefits via Educator Advantage package
  • Liberty Mutual: Occupation discount for teachers; additional benefits via customized car insurance for teachers
  • Meemic: Occupation discount for teachers, including newly certified teacher discount; Additional teacher benefits available

There are also many other discounts offered by car insurance companies that teachers may be eligible for to save more on premiums:

  • Bundling discount: If you need property insurance (homeowners, renters, or condo) in addition to auto, you can save a lot of money by bundling your policies with the same insurer. Most teacher union group discounts also include bundling options.
  • Multi-vehicle discount: You can also save on your premium if you have more than one vehicle on your policy.
  • Safety equipment discount: Many insurers offer a discount for various safety features installed in your vehicle, including seatbelts, airbags, anti-theft devices, daytime running lights, and more.
  • Telematics discount: Telematics programs, or usage-based insurance, track your driving habits and reward you with a discount for driving safely. All major insurers offer a telematics program, and the maximum discount can be significant.
  • Safe driver: You may be eligible for a discount if you have gone a certain number of years without violations.
  • Good student: If you have a young driver on your policy who is a high school or college student and maintains a certain grade point average, many insurers provide a discount.

Recap

Teachers’ unions provide aid and support to educators across the country, advocating for improved working conditions and better salaries. However, the benefits don’t stop there, as many also offer special programs and discounts to support teachers outside the classroom. These include car and home insurance discounts, which can help teachers save on these essential products. However, it’s still important to shop around with other auto insurance companies outside of union benefits as they may not always provide the absolute best deal available.
