Nationwide offers various coverage options and two usage-based insurance programs to keep your costs down. That’s why 16 million people in the United States use Nationwide. In Indiana, we recommend Nationwide for infrequent drivers and safe drivers, but your rates can increase if you have any dings on your driving record.
Nationwide has two usage-based insurance programs that you can take advantage of depending on your driving habits and needs: a pay-per-mile insurance plan called SmartMiles, and a telematics program called SmartRide. The latter provides insights into how you drive and rewards you for driving safely with a discount of up to 40 percent on your premium.
Meanwhile, SmartMiles is ideal for low-mileage drivers (for example, retirees, stay-at-home parents, remote workers). It consists of a fixed base rate and a variable rate per mile, so your monthly rate is calculated by multiplying your per-mile rate by the number of miles you drove that month, then adding the base rate. For example, if your base rate is $60 per month and your variable rate is $0.07 per mile, your rate would be $95 if you drove 500 miles in a given month ($0.07 x 500 + $60).
You should always compare rates to a traditional policy and take your realistic mileage into account when determining if your quoted rate is a good deal, but if you drive less than average, SmartMiles may give you a much better rate.
Just because Indiana’s minimum coverage requirements are low doesn’t mean you shouldn’t opt for more coverage. Low limits make insurance affordable on average, but liability insurance does not cover the driver’s injuries and damages.
In addition to liability coverage, you can add the following coverage options with Nationwide:
In addition to its telematics program, Nationwide offers several other discounts to help safe drivers save even more money on premiums. These include an accident-free discount for those who maintain an accident-free record, and a safe driving discount for those who have been free of major violations for at least five years.
That said, there are numerous other discounts we recommend you inquire about, especially if you’re a high-risk driver who is likely to have higher premiums:
NOTE
Always keep your physical or digital insurance card while driving. Failure to show it to the police for any reason could result in license and registration suspensions, fees, or an SR-22.
Erie is a regional insurer available in 12 states (and D.C.), including Indiana. It was founded 100 years ago and is based in Erie, Pennsylvania. Although its availability is limited, it is a relatively large insurer and is known for offering competitive rates and stellar customer service.
Erie has a very strong customer service record in Indiana, making it our top choice for drivers looking for the best customer experience from their auto insurance provider. In J.D. Power’s 2024 Auto Insurance Study, Erie ranked first in the North Central region for customer satisfaction with a score of 710 — it was the only company to earn a score above 700 aside from USAA.
In addition, it ranked third in the country in J.D. Power’s 2024 Claims Satisfaction Study with a score of 733 (the average was 697)2. It also earned a spot on the CRASH Network Honor Roll3 with a score of A-, ranking 6th out of 97 insurers.
One of Erie’s unique offerings is its rate lock option, which allows policyholders to lock in their rates as long as they don’t add or remove drivers from the policy or move. This prevents yearly premium increases that are common across the board with other insurers.
If you add or remove coverages, the rate lock will remain in place, but your rate will just be adjusted to reflect the changes. Erie also advertises that you can keep your rate locked even if you file a claim.
A typical policy from Erie includes the standard liability coverages, and you can choose to add comprehensive and collision coverage as well. In addition, Erie has some more unique coverages you can choose to add to your auto policy:
USAA caters to the military community with specialized coverage options, discounts, perks, and lower-than-average premiums. In addition to insurance, it offers banking and investment products to U.S. Armed Forces service members, families, and veterans. USAA has a very high customer satisfaction rating in Indiana, according to J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Auto Insurance Study; its score of 726 is higher than even the top-ranked insurance provider in the North Central region, Erie, although its limited customer base makes it ineligible for the study award criteria.
USAA offers low rates, and you can save with a robust set of safe-driving discounts. USAA offers a telematics-based driver behavior program called SafePilot and defensive driving and driver training discounts.
USAA requires an acceptable military document and government-issued identification to sign up for an auto insurance policy. Acceptable documents include:
A whopping 70 percent of housing units in Indiana are occupied by their owners, according to the United States Census, with an average of 2.5 persons per household.4 With rising interest rates and inflation, many homeowners are looking for ways to reduce the costs associated with owning property. One way to do so is to bundle your home and auto insurance policies through State Farm.
State Farm advertises an average discount of $1,356 annually when you bundle your auto insurance with homeowners insurance, and a discount of up to $834 annually when you bundle auto with renters insurance. Although it doesn’t advertise other discount amounts, you can also save money by bundling auto with a condo or life insurance policy. Homeowners insurance financially protects your family and home from unforeseen incidents, including theft and natural disasters.
State Farm’s driver behavior program, Drive Safe & Save, can save you up to 30 percent on your auto policy when you practice safe driving habits. After you enroll and download the State Farm app, you’ll receive an automatic 10 percent initial discount. State Farm determines your Drive Safe & Save score from your driving habits and will apply the discount at your next policy renewal. Behaviors the app is tracking for Indiana drivers include braking, acceleration, speed, cornering, and distracted driving.
State Farm topped our list of the best rideshare auto insurance, which is key for anyone driving for services like Uber or Lyft. State Farm is widely available and offers affordable rates for rideshare drivers, though rideshare coverage will be more expensive than a standard policy.
An additional benefit of State Farm’s rideshare coverage is its lower deductible — Uber and Lyft do offer some coverage, but have $2,500 deductibles for collision and comprehensive coverages. If you add State Farm’s rideshare coverage to your auto policy, you’ll pay your State Farm deductible instead of the rideshare company’s deductible in the event of a claim.
Progressive offers cheap auto insurance rates for Indiana drivers with less-than-stellar driving records. We found its rates didn’t increase as much as other providers after a DUI, a situation where it’s notoriously difficult to get reasonable rates. Like all the companies on this list, Progressive offers a usage-based insurance program in Snapshot.
A DUI is a serious driving violation, and it results in serious consequences. In addition to the legal ramifications, a DUI often results in a higher auto insurance premium. Of the providers we analyzed, we found Progressive had the lowest percentage increase after a DUI. The average annual cost of auto insurance with Progressive after a DUI is $1,727 — about $160 more than full coverage insurance.
Provider | Full coverage avg. in Indiana with clean record | Full coverage avg. in Indiana with DUI | Percent difference |
---|---|---|---|
USAA | $1,031 | $1,818 | +76% |
Progressive | $1,567 | $1,727 | +10% |
State Farm | $1,982 | $2,703 | +36% |
Statewide average | $1,713 | $2,883 | +68% |
Progressive earned the top spot in J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Insurance Digital Experience Study’s Service category with 737 points out of 1,000.5 This category accounts for existing customers’ satisfaction with policy-servicing activities on desktop, mobile web, and mobile apps. The survey found that many digital tools don’t make it easy for customers to perform advanced tasks, so Progressive’s top spot is even more impressive. If you like logging in and getting all your auto insurance needs taken care of without talking on the phone, Progressive is a great option.
Progressive’s telematics program, Snapshot, offers a mobile app or plug-in device to track your driving habits. The technology tracks braking, accelerating, driving late, distracted driving, and how much you drive. Progressive will check your driving habits every six months to adjust your rates, so make sure you drive safely, otherwise your rate could actually go up.
We evaluated auto insurance providers based on four key criteria: pricing, claims handling, customer experience, and coverage options. Here’s how we assessed each category:
