The Ford F-150 is the country’s most popular pickup truck, known for its reliability and reasonable pricing. However, truck repairs can be expensive, so it’s important to find an insurer that offers affordable rates. Nationwide’s solid service record and competitive rates make it our top choice for insuring F-150s. After USAA, which is available only to the military community, Nationwide has the lowest average rates for the F-150, at $124 per month, which is 26 percent lower than the national average.
In addition, Nationwide offers accident forgiveness, which prevents a rate increase after your first accident. The company’s telematics program, Nationwide SmartRide, offers up to 40 percent off premiums for safe driving, while its pay-per-mile program, Nationwide SmartMiles, can provide significant savings if you drive less than average. You can also take advantage of other car insurance discounts, like those for being a homeowner, bundling auto and home insurance, being a safe driver, and taking a defensive driving course.
Nationwide also earns top marks for customer service. It ranked fourth in J.D. Power’s 2025 Auto Claims Satisfaction Study and first in J.D. Power’s 2025 Digital Experience Study for the service category, making it a great choice for customers who prefer to handle claims via an app or website instead of over the phone.
FYI:
Unlike some other providers, Nationwide does not offer accident forgiveness automatically if you’ve remained accident-free for a certain amount of time. You’ll always need to pay to include it as an additional coverage on your policy, but that cost may be worth it if you get into an accident.
Nationwide is a great pick for Ford F-150 drivers, customers who want to participate in a telematics program, and low-mileage drivers.

After USAA, which is limited to the military community, GEICO has the lowest monthly average rate for insuring a Chevy Silverado, at $125 per month, on average. If you take advantage of GEICO’s many discount opportunities, there are even more ways to save. For example, military personnel and retired military veterans can get a discount of up to 15 percent, federal employees can save up to 12 percent, and customers who insure multiple vehicles can receive up to 25 percent off.
GEICO is known for its digital-first approach to insurance, and it offers an easy online tool that provides instant quotes and allows you to finalize your purchase without having to speak to an agent. If you have an iPhone, you can view your GEICO ID from within your Apple Wallet so you don’t have to worry about logging in to find your ID cards if you’re in an accident. (However, you should always keep a physical copy in your car in case your phone dies and make sure your state accepts digital proof of insurance.)
From the app, you can also request roadside assistance and access GEICO’s Easy Photo Estimate tool, which, if approved for your claim, conveniently allows you to submit pictures to an auto adjuster.
GEICO is an excellent choice for Chevy Silverado owners, federal employees or military members who can benefit from discounts, and people who want to manage their policy online.

USAA offers great rates for military members, veterans and their families, with the cheapest average premiums for both the Ford F-150 and the Chevy Silverado. It also has generous discounts, including 60 percent off if you’re deployed and storing your vehicle, and 15 percent off when you garage your truck on a military base.
Like Nationwide, USAA has two telematics programs. It provides a 10 percent discount when you sign up for USAA SafePilot and up to 30 percent at renewal if you drive safely. If you don’t drive very often, you can opt for SafePilot Miles, which provides a low-mileage discount of up to 20 percent, depending on how little you drive. You can also earn an additional 20 percent off for driving safely.
USAA’s plans include an accident forgiveness program, which applies if you’ve been accident-free for five years, and 24/7 roadside assistance. Drivers tend to be satisfied with their USAA insurance; it consistently earns some of the highest customer satisfaction ratings in J.D. Power’s auto insurance studies.
USAA is a superb choice for military members, veterans and their families who are eligible for USAA membership.

If you’re thinking of purchasing or have recently purchased a new pickup truck, Travelers offers several perks that are particularly appealing. First, it has a specific new-car discount that applies to policyholders who purchase a new car or own a car that is less than 3 years old.
In addition, the company’s Premier New Car Replacement package includes new-car replacement coverage, which will pay to replace your vehicle with a brand-new one of the same make and model if yours is totaled in a covered loss within the first five years. This is one of the most generous time frames for new-car-replacement coverage; most insurers offer it for only the first two or three years of ownership. The package also includes gap coverage and a lower glass deductible.
Other benefits include accident and minor traffic violation forgiveness as part of Travelers’ Responsible Driver Plan, which is an optional add-on. This coverage will prevent your premium from increasing after an accident or minor traffic violation within a specified period, usually three years.

The Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado are both on the list of the top 10 most frequently stolen vehicles as of 2023.3 If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, consider adding new-car-replacement coverage to protect your investment in case it’s stolen in the first few years.
Travelers is best for drivers with a new vehicle and those looking for various coverage add-ons.

If you use your pickup for business purposes, you’ll need specialized commercial auto insurance, as a personal policy will not cover you. Progressive offers robust commercial insurance policies for pickup-truck drivers to ensure you have the coverage you need for your business. It also provides coverage for borrowed, rented and hired vehicles.
With Progressive, you can bundle your commercial auto policy with various other business insurance policies, including general liability, workers’ compensation and professional liability. Commercial auto customers can take advantage of many discounts, including savings for having maintained continuous insurance coverage for the past 12 months and insuring their personal vehicle with the company.
You could save even more with Progressive’s Smart Haul program, which is available to new Progressive truck customers using an electronic logging device (ELD). It’s essentially a telematics program for commercial truck drivers and will reward you with a discount for safe driving. The company states that users save an average of $1,261 annually with the program. For trucks without ELDs, Progressive offers a similar program called Snapshot ProView, which relies on plug-in devices and provides a minimum 5 percent discount.
Progressive is a good choice for drivers who use their pickup trucks for business purposes and need commercial insurance, as well as for drivers who want to manage their policy online.

No single pickup truck is the cheapest to insure across the board. The Ford Maverick and the Ford Ranger are often cited as more affordable to insure, but your rates can vary greatly depending on the vehicle’s uses, safety features, and factors like your own driving history.
The cheapest insurer for truck insurance depends on where you live, what type of truck you drive, whether it’s for personal or business use, and other factors. In general, USAA, GEICO, Nationwide and Travelers tend to have the cheapest rates for pickup-truck insurance, but you may find that a different company offers you a lower rate for your particular situation.
On average, GEICO tends to be cheaper than Progressive for pickup-truck insurance, but this may not always be the case. We found that GEICO charges over $20 less per month than Progressive, on average, for several pickup-truck models, but you may still get a lower rate from Progressive depending on your driving record and other factors. We recommend that you compare multiple auto insurance quotes before you decide on an insurer.
There are several reasons why your car insurance might be high when you have nothing on your record. If you live in an urban area, particularly one with a high vehicle theft or accident rate, your premium will likely be higher. You also may pay more if you have poor credit, as most states allow insurers to use credit history as a rating factor. If you’re a young driver, particularly under 25, your insurance rate can also be quite high.
