Allstate vs. Progressive Coverage Options

If you’re only looking for basic coverage, you’ll find options such as liability, comprehensive, collision, uninsured/underinsured motorist, personal injury protection, and medical payments from both Allstate and Progressive.

They also have many of the same add-on coverage options, although only Progressive offers custom parts coverage. If that happens to be important to you, Allstate may not be the best choice.

Here is a list of some of the main optional coverages each company offers:

CoverageAllstateProgressiveWhy it matters
Roadside assistanceYesYesThis covers roadside services like towing and fuel delivery if your car breaks down
Rental car reimbursementYesYesIf your car is in the shop due to a covered incident, this will pay for a rental car
Gap or loan/lease payoffYesYesGenerally required if you finance or lease your vehicle — this covers the difference between your car’s value and what you still owe if it’s totaled
Accident forgivenessYesYesPrevents a rate increase following one accident within a certain period, usually three years
Vehicle protection/mechanical breakdown insuranceYesYesCovers car repairs once your manufacturer’s warranty expires
Custom parts and equipment value (CPE) coverageYesYesPays for repair or replacement of aftermarket upgrades you’ve added to your car if they’re damaged in a covered claim
Rideshare coverageYesYesProvides additional coverage when working for rideshare services like Uber

It’s also important to note that certain coverages may not be available in every state, so reach out to an agent if you have questions.

TIP:

If you have a violation on your record, you will be considered higher risk by insurers and you can expect to pay higher premiums. Progressive has some of the best rates for high-risk drivers — particularly those with DUIs — but they are still higher than rates for drivers with clean driving records. Drivers with violations can check out the best auto insurers for high-risk drivers.

Allstate vs. Progressive Discounts

You may be able to save money on your premium by taking advantage of various auto insurance discounts offered by both Allstate and Progressive. Although Allstate is our top pick for bundling home and auto insurance, Progressive also offers a discount for bundling policies. If you already have a policy with either insurer, it’s worth checking how much you could save by adding auto insurance.

If your car has certain safety features, you may get a better rate from Allstate. However, only Progressive has discounts for getting an online quote and taking a defensive driving course.

Here is a full list of the main discounts offered by both companies — keep in mind that like coverages, discounts vary by state.

Winner: Progressive offers slightly more discounts, but that doesn’t automatically mean it will be cheaper for a given driver. It’s still worth getting a quote from both companies, as you may not be eligible for all discounts, and your rate depends on various factors.

Allstate vs. Progressive Telematics Programs

In order to save even more on your policy, you may consider signing up for a telematics program, which Allstate and Progressive both offer. These programs use a mobile app to track your driving habits and offer a discount if you drive safely. Allstate’s program is called Drivewise, while Progressive’s is called Snapshot.

Allstate no longer advertises its Drivewise discounts, noting that they vary by state, but it previously stated a discount of up to 10 percent when you sign up and up to 40 percent when your policy renews. (Note: Drivewise is not available in California or Arkansas.)

Progressive doesn’t advertise the maximum percentage discount for Snapshot, either, but according to their website, safe drivers can save an average of $322 at policy renewal and an average of $169 at sign-up. Snapshot is not available in California, and the sign-up discount is not offered in Hawaii or New York.

In J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, Drivewise scored higher than Snapshot with a score of 649 (Snapshot scored 628)2.

TIP:

Both Allstate Drivewise and Progressive Snapshot may result in a rate increase if they detect unsafe driving, so be sure to consider this and only opt in if you are confident in your safe driving habits.

In addition to Drivewise, Allstate offers a pay-per-mile program called Milewise. The way the pay-per-mile program works is that you pay a daily base rate, plus a per-mile rate for every mile you drive. This may be a good option if you’re a low-mileage driver. That said, Allstate has recently reduced the number of states where Milewise is offered and no longer provides a list of these states on its website. So it’s probably wise to check with an agent if you might be interested in this program.

Winner: Allstate

Allstate vs. Progressive Customer Service

When it comes to customer service, Allstate may be a better choice than Progressive in most regions, according to several industry studies and metrics. Here is how they compare in key customer experience areas:

Claims Satisfaction

Allstate scored 693 out of 1,000 in the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, placing it ahead of Progressive but still below average. Meanwhile, Progressive’s score of 673 placed it third to last among the major insurers evaluated in the study. Claims satisfaction measures how policyholders rate their experiences managing the claims process, which includes factors such as speed, fairness, and ease of service.

Interestingly, Progressive ranked higher than Allstate on the 2026 CRASH Network Report Card, which evaluates auto shops’ experience dealing with insurance providers. None of the 10 largest insurers earned higher than a C+ in this study, but Allstate’s D+ grade is still quite low.

Both companies ranked below average in almost every region — the exceptions being California for Progressive, and Florida and New England for Allstate.

As of 2024 (the most recent data at the time of this writing), it had a complaint index of 2.79, while Allstate’s was 4.56. It’s worth noting that both companies received more complaints than average, which is represented by an index of 1.

Shopping

Both Allstate and Progressive offer flexible ways for customers to shop for policies, get quotes, and make a purchase, including online and over the phone with an agent. In terms of customers’ satisfaction with the shopping experience from both companies, Allstate beats Progressive.

Allstate earned a score of 669 out of 1,000 on J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Insurance Shopping Study and ranked above average, while Progressive’s score of 645 placed the company below average. This study evaluates other factors beyond just the quote process, including price, policy offerings, and distribution channel (e.g., online platforms, agents, or direct sales), so Allstate’s score suggests customers are satisfied with these aspects of the company as well.

Allstate and Progressive are fairly comparable when it comes to their financial stability, availability, coverage options, and discounts. The best company for you will ultimately depend on which company offers you what you need at the best rate.

On average, Progressive has the cheapest rates for most drivers, including those with violations. Its average rate for full coverage policies is 29 percent ($855 per year) cheaper than Allstate’s, and its average rate for drivers with a DUI is 39 percent ($1,799) cheaper.

Meanwhile, Allstate fares better for customer service in most regions, particularly Florida and New England. However, keep in mind that company rankings will not necessarily reflect your experience. In addition, you should always get quotes from several companies, as average prices may not be the same as what you’re quoted.

If you drive fewer-than-average miles per year, you may benefit from Allstate’s Milewise program, assuming it’s available where you live. Check with an agent if you’re interested, and calculate whether the pay-per-mile program makes sense financially compared to other standard quotes you’ve received.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, Progressive is not the same as Allstate; they are separate insurance companies. They are comparable in many areas, but one may be a better fit than the other, depending on your circumstances and needs.

No company is objectively better than Progressive, but several companies may be better depending on your needs and priorities. For example, you may get better rates from GEICO or USAA (if eligible), and you may have a better customer experience with State Farm, but that won’t be true across the board.

Many companies, including Progressive and GEICO, have better average rates than Allstate, but no company will always have better rates since premiums depend on various factors. Always get quotes from several companies to compare rates before buying a policy.

Methodology

At AutoInsurance.com, we use four key factors to evaluate auto insurers:

  • Price (40%): We analyze average premiums for both full and minimum coverage for a standard driving profile of a good driver with good credit. We also looked at rates for other driver profiles, including those with violations or low credit scores. We also consider available discounts. Full coverage averages use the following limits:
    • Bodily injury liability: $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident
    • Property damage liability: $50,000 per accident
    • Uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury: $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident
    • Comprehensive and collision: $500 deductible
  • Claims Handling (25%): An auto insurer’s claims handling process should be quick, transparent, and efficient, with clear communication, fair evaluation of damages, and timely payment or resolution. We assess claims practices using sources like the CRASH Network Insurer Report Card and J.D. Power’s Claims Satisfaction Report, and financial strength from sources like AM Best and S&P Global Ratings. We also include real-life customer experiences when possible.
  • Customer Experience (25%): We evaluate the ease of the customer journey, from getting a quote and purchasing a policy to making changes or accessing documents. We consider the availability and quality of both online and agent interactions, as well as the functionality of the company’s website and mobile app. Our sources include J.D. Power studies, the NAIC complaint index, BBB ratings, and app store reviews.
  • Coverage Options (10%): We review each company’s coverage offerings and prioritize providers with options beyond the state-required minimums, such as accident forgiveness, gap coverage, rideshare coverage, and more.
