Maryland has more than 4 million licensed drivers, requiring them to have car insurance before hitting the road. The state’s insurance laws mandate these minimum coverage limits:
Although minimum coverage gets you on the road, it doesn’t offer enough protection. If you’re in a serious accident, you’re likely to pay most of the damages out of pocket. It’s important to get full coverage if you can, so you can also have your car repaired. This includes coverages like comprehensive and collision, which foot the bill for repairs after you pay a deductible.

USAA has a financial office in Annapolis, Maryland.
You cannot go any period of time without car insurance in Maryland. If you’re caught driving without insurance, you will be charged $200 for the first 30 days lapsed and $7 a day thereafter, according to the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA).
Maryland is an at-fault state, which means that the at-fault driver is responsible for the cost of injuries and property damages of both drivers.
At-fault laws, also known as tort laws, still apply if you get into an accident—even if you don’t have insurance. That means it’s still possible for you to file a claim through the other driver’s provider. However, if you’re at fault in the accident, you could face penalties, jail time, or a lawsuit. If you don’t have insurance, you will be financially responsible for any injuries or damage you caused in the accident.
According to the Insurance Research Council, 17 percent of drivers in Maryland do not have insurance. That’s the 14th-highest uninsured motorist rate in the country. The national average is about 15 percent.
