Homesite was founded in 1997 as a direct-to-consumer property insurance company. It was one of the first insurers that allowed customers to purchase home insurance entirely online. In 2014, it was acquired by American Family as the latter company sought to add a direct sales channel to appeal to different consumer demographics.

Based out of Boston, Homesite remains primarily a property insurance company offering home, renters, and condo insurance, but it has expanded to also offer auto, pet, commercial, and flood policies. Its auto policies are underwritten by American Family affiliate companies and are essentially American Family auto policies, while its pet insurance is offered in partnership with Embrace Pet Insurance. When you enter your zip code to begin an auto insurance quote on Homesite’s website, you are directed to American Family.

As a senior editor and analyst at AutoInsurance.com, I’ve compiled this in-depth review of Homesite using our team’s industry research as well as my own experience to walk you through what you need to know about the company.

Quick Look: Homesite Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Allows for online quotes and purchasing

  • Robust property coverage for those looking to bundle

  • Financially stable

Cons

  • Doesn’t have a ton of add-ons

  • Auto coverage not available in all states

Who Is Homesite Auto Insurance Best For?

Homesite car insurance is known for its direct-to-consumer business model and is therefore a good option for customers who live within its service area and want to buy a policy online.

Homesite Is Best for Those Who:

  • Prefer to get a quote and purchase a policy online
  • Only need basic auto coverage
  • Want to bundle property insurance and take advantage of Homesite’s robust home coverage options

Homesite Is Not Best for Those Who:

  • Need more than basic auto coverage
  • Live in a state where American Family doesn’t sell car insurance

How Much Does Homesite Car Insurance Cost?

Homesite doesn’t have available pricing data for its car insurance, but considering that its auto policies are issued through American Family, the latter’s pricing can give you a good idea of what you can expect to pay.

American Family has an average annual premium of $1,936 for full coverage and $604 for minimum coverage, both of which are slightly below the national average.

I’ve included a table below comparing American Family’s average rates to major competitors:

CompanyAverage annual premium for full coverageAverage annual premium for minimum coverage
Allstate$2,605$840
American Family$1,936$604
Farmers$2,979$1,002
GEICO$1,731$517
Nationwide$1,808$718
Progressive$1,960$638
State Farm$2,167$674
Travelers$1,597$576
USAA$1,407$417

How You Can Save on Your Policy With Homesite

Homesite only advertises home insurance discounts on its website. However, one of them is a bundling discount, which could save you 10 percent if you bundle home and auto. To check what other discounts you might be eligible for, get a quote or speak with an American Family agent.

Homesite Quote and Purchase Process

Homesite lets you get an auto insurance quote online, but it’s not directly through them. When you go to start a quote and click on Auto, it lets you know that it will be taking you to the American Family website.

I entered my ZIP code and was redirected as expected:

I then needed to reselect the type of insurance I wanted a quote for and re-enter my ZIP code. American Family isn’t available in my state, so I couldn’t go any further, but it linked me to various different companies that could provide me coverage.

If I lived in a state where coverage was available, I would have been able to continue the quote process and even purchase my policy online.

What Types of Auto Insurance Coverage Does Homesite Offer?

Homesite auto policies provide the standard coverages you would expect, including liability, collision, and comprehensive. You can also choose to add medical payments, personal injury protection, and/or uninsured motorist coverage.

Beyond these coverages, it also offers the following add-on options:

CoverageWhat it covers
Loan/lease assistanceAlso called gap coverage, this add-on helps cover the difference between the outstanding balance on your car loan and your car’s value in the event that it’s totaled.
Rental reimbursementThis helps pay for a rental car if you need one while your car is being repaired.
Roadside assistanceThis covers roadside assistance services if your car breaks down, including towing, battery jump start, tire change, etc.

FYI:

If you currently finance or lease your vehicle, your lender will usually require you to get gap coverage, so it’s important to look for an insurer that offers this option.

Homesite: Customer Satisfaction

Since Homesite is an affiliate of American Family, I looked at customer satisfaction data for both companies to get a better picture of Homesite’s customer service record.

American Family ranked 62nd out of 97 on the most recent CRASH Network Report Card, though it scored the highest among the ten largest providers in the U.S. CONNECT, another American Family affiliate, ranked slightly below average on J.D. Power’s Auto Insurance Study in the California region.1

In addition, according to the NAIC, Homesite has a complaint index of 3.25, meaning it receives more complaints than average. That said, when I applied a filter for private passenger auto complaints specifically, the number of complaints dropped to 0.

Homesite did rank above average in J.D. Power’s 2025 Digital Experience Study in the shopping category, with a score of 542 (for reference, the highest-ranked company scored 559). This indicates that customers are satisfied with the company’s purchasing process.

When it comes to financial strength, the company’s record is solid — American Family has a rating of A from AM Best.

Filing a Claim With Homesite

Clicking on the claims section of Homesite’s website only brings up the option to file a claim for property, flood, or commercial insurance.

While it doesn’t say anything about auto claims, I expect that all auto insurance policy management and claims filing needs to be done through American Family, as that is the issuing company. With American Family, you can easily file a claim online, via the app, over the phone, or in person with a local agent.

Homesite's Website and Mobile App

Homesite’s website is straightforward if a little outdated. It has limited information on its offerings, and I found that the formatting was not always the easiest to navigate. That said, it provides a clear prompt to get started with a quote right on the homepage — though, as I mentioned earlier, the actual quote process for auto insurance will take place on American Family’s website.

Homesite does not have a mobile app, but again, since its auto policies are issued through American Family, I expect that policyholders can use the American Family app to manage their accounts.

  • Customer Experience (25%): We evaluate the ease of the customer journey, from getting a quote to purchasing and managing a policy. We also assess a company’s availability of local agents, or lack thereof, as well as its online and mobile user experience. Our sources include J.D.
