Looking for auto insurance can be time-consuming, especially if you’re getting quotes from many different companies. Using an insurance platform like VIU by HUB can simplify the process by allowing you to input your information once and compare quotes from several different companies.

VIU by HUB is a subsidiary of HUB International, which is a larger insurance brokerage company. HUB International was founded in 1998 in Chicago and currently operates across the U.S. and Canada. It provides property, casualty, risk management, life, and health insurance policies, as well as employee benefits and wealth management products.

VUI by HUB is a digital-only platform that offers various types of personal insurance policies, including auto, motorcycle, recreational vehicle, home, renters, condo, life, and pet insurance. Its Advisors are state-licensed insurance brokers that work with you to find the best coverage for your needs.

Quick Look: Viu Insurance Agency Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Provides quotes from various companies for quick comparison

  • Allows for managing policies from different providers in one place

  • Offers policies in every state

Cons

  • Does not offer insurance from some popular companies, like State Farm

  • Not an insurance provider

How VIU by HUB Insurance Works

VIU by HUB is not an insurance provider but instead functions as a broker or agency, partnering with over 50 insurance companies to connect customers with providers that can offer them the coverage they need for the best prices. You can easily get preliminary quotes from several providers online by inputting a few personal details, but you’ll need to speak with a VIU by HUB broker, called an Advisor, to finalize and purchase your policy (or policies).

Like with any insurance agency, one of the main benefits is that you can access a wide range of providers from a single place, and brokers are independent, meaning they are not incentivized to promote a certain insurer over another. However, it only offers policies from its partner companies, meaning that you may still want to look for other quotes elsewhere, especially if you’re interested in more regional or local insurers.

VIU by HUB doesn’t actually underwrite policies, so while you can purchase and manage a policy through them, you will work directly with your insurance company when filing a claim or for billing issues. Brokers and agencies receive commissions from insurers when they sign up customers, so their services are free to you.

Who Is VIU by HUB Insurance Best For?

VIU by HUB provides access to experienced insurance brokers who can walk you through coverage options from various partner insurance companies.

VIU Is Best for Those Who:

  • Want to work with a broker who can compare options from multiple insurers and provide expert advice
  • Need help determining coverage needs
  • Drivers who value convenience and digital management
  • Low-mileage drivers, thanks to VIU by HUB’s partnership with Mile Auto

VIU Is Not Best for Those Who:

  • Prefer to purchase insurance directly from an insurer rather than an agency or broker
  • Want to explore insurers that are not VIU partners, like certain regional insurers and even State Farm
  • Those needing very specialized or complex commercial-type auto coverage

VIU by HUB Cost and Coverages

Since VIU by HUB isn’t actually an insurance provider, the cost of the policies it brokers will depend on the rates set by its individual auto insurance partners. It brokers auto policies for various major insurers, including GEICO, Progressive, Travelers, Nationwide, Allstate, and Mercury.

The following table includes the national average rates for many of the major insurers that VIU by HUB partners with to give you an idea of what you might be quoted.

CompanyAverage annual premium for full coverageAverage annual premium for minimum coverage
Allstate$2,915$823
GEICO$1,867$558
Liberty Mutual$2,861$1,375
Mercury$2,367$993
Nationwide$1,987$993
Progressive$2,060$702
Safeco$2,284$810
Travelers$1,837$684

Similarly, the coverages it can offer depend on those offered by its partner insurance companies. It includes liability, uninsured motorist, comprehensive, and collision coverage on quotes by default, but if you need additional coverages, such as accident forgiveness, gap coverage, or rental car reimbursement, be sure to ask a broker about your options.

TIP:

If you don’t immediately see any options that work for you, it may still be worth speaking to a broker. Because VIU by HUB is a broker, advisors can check multiple carriers at once and may find a cheaper or better-fitting policy than the first quotes you see.

How You Can Save on Your Policy With VIU by HUB

VIU by HUB can help you save right off the bat by making it easier and faster for you to shop around for auto insurance. Since VIU by HUB is an insurance broker, it doesn’t directly offer discounts on auto policies. However, you can access the same discounts if you purchase through VIU as you would if you got a policy directly from a given insurance company.

When getting an auto policy, for example, VIU will ask if you’d also like quotes for home insurance to save even more, and it will apply bundling discounts in the quotes it provides.

Here are some of the discounts that are most commonly offered by car insurance providers and that you are likely to see applied to your quotes — be sure to ask your VIU by HUB broker about any others you may be eligible for.

  • Bundling discount: Get a discount for bundling auto with another policy type — usually, home insurance provides the deepest discount.
  • Good student discount: Full-time students who maintain a strong academic record generally qualify for a discount.
  • Military affiliation: Some insurers provide discounts for active and/or retired military personnel.
  • Multi-vehicle discount: Save money by insuring more than one car.
  • Safe driver discount: Many insurers offer a discount if you’ve gone a certain amount of time without violations, usually three years.
  • Security device discount: You will likely qualify for a discount if your car is equipped with certain safety features or anti-theft devices.

VIU by HUB Quote and Purchase Process

VIU by HUB provides online quotes in just a few minutes, but you can also call a broker if you prefer. We tried getting a quote online and found the process to be very simple. You’ll first need to input a few basic personal details, and you can add information for more drivers if there will be more than one insured on the policy.

You’ll then need to provide information about your vehicle and driving history, including at-fault accidents, not-at-fault accidents, and other violations. You also have the option of adding a property quote. For the purpose of this test quote, we declined this option.

The whole process took less than five minutes, and we were then presented with quotes from five insurers, ordered from cheapest to most expensive. The default deductible option provided was $1,000, but there was an option to customize it and choose $500, $250, or opt out of comprehensive and/or collision coverage.

The policy coverages included liability limits of 100/300/50 as well as uninsured motorist coverage, and there was no way to customize these. They didn’t include any other add-on coverages, but we can assume these quotes would increase if we were to add any after speaking with a broker.

At the bottom, VIU indicated that there were additional options that could only be accessed by phone with a broker.

Selecting a policy led to another screen letting us know that we would need to finalize policy details with a VIU by HUB Advisor, followed by a button to request to be contacted. The company states on its website that once you confirm your purchase with a broker, policies can be finalized on the same day. Your broker will reach out to your selected insurance company on your behalf to get your policy issued.

FYI:

In partnership with Canopy Connect, VIU by HUB offers a useful digital wallet where you can import and manage all your insurance policies in one place, even if you didn’t purchase them through the company.

Filing a Claim With VIU by HUB

To file an insurance claim, you’ll need to follow your insurance company’s process — as a broker, VIU by HUB doesn’t handle claims. Most major insurers allow you to start the claims process online or via their mobile app, but you should also be able to do so by phone if you prefer. Be sure to check with your insurer if you have any questions about the claims process.

In general, it’s best to file a claim as soon as possible after an incident, and be prepared to share information including your policy details, how and when the accident occurred, and any photos you have.

VIU by HUB: Customer Satisfaction

Customer satisfaction ratings for VIU by HUB are few and far between. It has no reviews on TrustPilot. We also checked the Better Business Bureau, which gave the company an A rating, indicating that it is a reputable and reliable business.1 VIU by HUB technically has a one-star customer review rating on the BBB, but there are only two reviews, so it’s not a representative sample size.

We also looked at the BBB listing for HUB International, which has an A+ rating and also has a one-star customer rating, based on five reviews. While these aren’t directly relevant to VIU by HUB, they provide a bit more insight into its operating company.

It’s also worth noting that reviews online tend to skew negative, and given the very small number of total reviews about the company, we would not necessarily make a recommendation against the company based on this data — especially when taking into account that there are some positive reviews of the company on the app store.

VIU by HUB's Website and Mobile App

VIU by HUB’s website is clean and modern, and it’s very easy to start a quote for the type of insurance you need. It provides an overview of the services it provides and a few big-name insurance partners, though it doesn’t include a full list of insurance companies that you might be recommended.

Its homepage also has a live chat option and a link to create or log into an existing account, which allows you access to VIU by HUB’s insurance dashboard. From the dashboard, you can access details for any policy you purchase through the company, including renewal dates, policy numbers, and coverages, and you can also import policies that you’ve purchased from any insurers directly.

This is a unique and helpful feature that allows you to view all of your policies in one place, and you can also request a quote for any new policies you may need. However, you won’t be able to actually make changes to policies from this dashboard.

VUI by HUB also has a mobile app for both iOS and Android, which is essentially just the dashboard in app form. It has positive reviews on the Apple App Store, but reviews are more mixed on the Google Play Store.

App VersionRating (out of 5)
iPhone (App Store)5 stars
Android (Google Play)3.6 stars

Conclusion

VIU by HUB is an online broker that works with more than 50 insurers, including GEICO, Progressive, and Travelers. After completing an online quote, you’ll work with a licensed Advisor to finalize your policy.

This model is best for drivers who want guidance and access to multiple carriers in one place. It may be limiting for those who prefer buying directly from an insurer or want options outside VIU’s partner network.

Frequently Asked Questions

No single insurance company has the most complaints overall, but several are at the bottom of the pack when looking at various industry metrics. For example, Fred Loya ranked last in the CRASH Network Report Card and has an NAIC Compliant Index of over 20, which is very high. The General is another low-ranking insurer with an above-average NAIC Complaint Index.

HUB International is an insurance brokerage company that offers a wide variety of insurance products, including property, casualty, risk management, life, and health insurance policies. It also provides employee benefits and investment products.

It’s not objectively better to use an insurance broker over an agent or vice versa, but the better option for you will depend on what you’re looking for. There are two types of insurance agents, captive and independent. Captive agents work for and represent a specific company — think State Farm agents. Meanwhile, independent agents represent multiple companies. Finally, a broker can shop coverage from a wider range of insurers, and their job is to find the policy that best fits your needs.

A broker is usually better for comparison shopping and finding the best deal, while an agent is better if you already know which insurer you want and want expert help navigating that one company’s products.

Whether it’s better to have a $500 or $1,000 deductible depends on your risk tolerance and personal finances. The higher your deductible, the lower your premium. However, a higher deductible also means that you must be prepared to pay more out of pocket if you file a claim. If you have enough savings to cover a $1,000 deductible, it could help save you money on your premium. However, if you’d rather pay more in your insurance payments but not have to cover a larger one-time payment, a lower deductible may be best.

Methodology – How We Review Insurance Companies

Our approach to reviewing insurance brokers is different from how we score insurance companies. Here’s what we look at:

  • User experience: We assess how simple it is to get a quote, compare options, and purchase a policy through the broker’s platform.
  • Customer satisfaction: Instead of relying on individual experiences, we reference third-party ratings from sources like Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau.
  • Digital tools: We examine how intuitive and accessible the broker’s website is for shoppers at every stage.
