Why we chose it

Nationwide has the strongest overall claims satisfaction ratings among major national insurers, making it a strong option for drivers who want the convenience and accessibility of a large national insurer without sacrificing claims service.

While none of the top 10 insurers has an above-average rating from the CRASH Network, which looks at auto shops’ experiences resolving claims with insurers, Nationwide sits near the top with a C grade. It also ranked fourth in J.D. Power’s 2025 Claims Satisfaction Study. It provides multiple ways for customers to manage their policies and claims, including digital tools that can make the process more convenient.

Safe drivers can take advantage of several discounts with Nationwide, including the company’s telematics program, SmartRide. It offers one of the highest maximum telematics discounts available at 40 percent. For those who drive less than average, the company’s pay-per-mile option, SmartMiles, can offer significant savings.

FYI:
Nationwide states that SmartRide will never increase rates, even if it detects risky driving behavior. In this case, it simply would not provide a discount.

Why we chose it

Erie is only available in 12 states, but it is easily one of the best options for car insurance for drivers in those states. It consistently earns high ratings for both customer service and claims handling, ranking first in J.D. Power’s 2026 Claims Satisfaction Study and even beating USAA’s score.

Erie also earned an A- grade on the 2026 CRASH Network Report Card, coming in fourth out of 91 insurance companies. The company’s network of local agents means that policyholders can work with someone who understands their coverage and can provide personalized guidance throughout the claims process. To file a claim, you can either contact your agent or call Erie directly 24/7. Auto glass claims can be reported online.

In addition to its exceptional customer and claims satisfaction ratings, Erie offers a broad range of auto insurance coverage and competitive rates, including for teen drivers. It also has a unique rate lock option, which guarantees that rates will not increase at renewal unless changes are made to the policy.

Why we chose it

AAA operates via various regional affiliates, so claims experience may vary between them. However, two of the largest regional motor clubs, Auto Club of Southern California and CSAA, have particularly strong claims handling. They scored above average in J.D. Power’s claims study and have B ratings from the CRASH Network, both landing a spot on the Honor Roll.

AAA tends to have higher-than-average car insurance rates, but pricing and coverage will vary depending on where you live and which regional club services your area. For drivers who place a high priority on having dependable help after an accident or breakdown, AAA can provide an especially valuable combination of insurance and roadside support.

AAA differs from other companies on this list in that roadside assistance is its primary offering, and existing members may wish to simplify their policy management by purchasing auto insurance from the company as well. Roadside assistance doesn’t have to be added separately to an AAA auto policy since you must have an existing roadside policy in order to purchase insurance.

Why we chose it

The quality of the claims experience and the protection provided by your auto insurance policy are particularly important considerations when your vehicle is new, as a serious accident can be especially costly. Auto-Owners’ Purchase Price Guarantee can be added to your policy to ensure that you will be paid the original purchase price of the car instead of its depreciated value if it’s totaled. This functions a bit differently than new car replacement, but it can still help protect your investment.

Another perk is its common loss deductible, which reduces your auto deductible by the amount of your personal property deductible if you have both auto and home policies with Auto-Owners and a covered loss involves both (for example, a flood that damages both your home and your car).

Policyholders can expect personalized assistance from the company’s independent agents when selecting coverage and navigating a claim. Claims can be filed via the policyholder’s agent or Auto-Owners’ after-hours phone number.

The company prioritizes having local claim branches close to its policyholders and independent agents to improve service — it currently has over 100 claim offices in 26 states. It ranked 16th out of 91 insurers on the 2026 CRASH Network Report Card with a B grade, and also earned an above-average claims satisfaction rating from J.D. Power.

Owners of new or nearly new vehicles, drivers concerned about vehicle replacement costs, drivers who prefer working with an independent agent

Unlike many companies, Amica allows for claims to be filed online via the policyholder’s portal or the company’s mobile app. Claims can also be reported by phone. Amica earned the highest CRASH Network grade on this list after Erie, ranking 12th overall. It also has an A+ financial strength rating from AM Best, meaning it can be trusted to pay out claims.

Amica is a particularly strong choice for drivers looking to bundle auto and property insurance, offering a discount of up to 30 percent for bundling auto with either a home or renters policy. Managing various insurance policies with the same company helps simplify policy management and can also make it easier to work with one insurer when a loss involves multiple types of coverage.

In addition to various policy types, Amica offers a range of add-on coverages for auto policies, including rental reimbursement, auto glass coverage, gap insurance, and rideshare coverage. Customers can also choose a dividend policy, which may cost more upfront but provides dividend payments annually.

Claims data is not publicized by insurance companies, so there is no list of which companies approve the most claims. However, USAA and Erie have very high claims satisfaction ratings, meaning that customers are happy with the way their claims are handled. This doesn’t necessarily mean that claims are approved more often or that payouts are higher.

Methodology

We evaluated the best car insurance companies for customer service based on the following four categories:

  • Claims handling (40%): Customers expect their insurer to process and resolve claims quickly and fairly. Claims handling was the most important metric used for this comparison, and to evaluate it, we looked at third-party evaluations from J.D. Power, CRASH Network, AM Best, and others sources that provide insight into insurers’ track records of fulfilling claims.
  • Pricing (25%): We looked at national average rates for both full and minimum coverage for safe drivers with good credit. Full coverage averages used the following limits:
    • Bodily injury liability: $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident
    • Property damage liability: $100,000 per accident
    • Uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury: $50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident
    • Uninsured motorist property damage: $10,000
    • Comprehensive and collision: $500 deductible
  • Customer experience (25%): We used third-party ratings from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) and J.D. Power to evaluate customers’ overall satisfaction getting a quote, managing policies, and resolving issues with insurance providers.
  • Coverage options (10%): We prioritize providers that offer add-ons such as gap insurance, roadside assistance, rideshare coverage and accident forgiveness.
