State Farm is another auto insurer with consistently above-average customer service ratings, and it wins this category thanks to its extensive network of insurance agents across the country. It is the only major national insurer in addition to Farmers that does not allow for online purchasing — while you can begin a quote online, you will need to speak to an agent to finalize the purchase.
State Farm’s captive agents provide personalized service and can help customers understand their coverage, make policy changes, and navigate the insurance process. They can also help policyholders identify potential discounts or opportunities to bundle policies. According to State Farm, customers who bundle home and auto save up to $1,429 per year. Additional policies can be bundled as well, including renters and life insurance.
Unlike regional insurers such as Erie, State Farm serves customers throughout most of the country, making its agent-based model accessible to a large number of drivers. It’s currently unavailable in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, though it plans to reenter the Massachusetts market in 2027.

For those who qualify, however, the company offers top-notch customer service along with affordable average rates and military-specific coverage.
USAA is not technically ranked in J.D. Power’s studies, likely due to its membership requirements, but it consistently earns the highest customer satisfaction scores in every region. It also ranked above average in both the service and shopping categories in J.D. Power’s Digital Experience Study.
Military members can benefit from various tailored discounts, including savings of up to 15 percent for garaging a covered vehicle on a military base and a discount of up to 60 percent if the vehicle is put in long-term storage during a deployment. Methodology
We evaluated the best car insurance companies for customer service based on the following four categories:
- Customer experience (40%): We weighed the overall customer experience most heavily, considering customers’ experience getting a quote, purchasing and managing a policy, having issues resolved, and interacting with insurers’ digital tools. We use third-party ratings from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the Better Business Bureau and J.D. Power to rate companies on these metrics.
- Pricing (25%): We looked at national average rates for both full and minimum coverage for safe drivers with good credit. Full coverage averages used the following limits:
- Bodily injury liability: $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident
- Property damage liability: $50,000 per accident
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury: $50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident
- Uninsured motorist property damage: $10,000
- Comprehensive and collision: $500 deductible
- Coverage options (25%): We prioritize providers that offer add-ons such as gap insurance, roadside assistance, rental reimbursement, rideshare coverage and accident forgiveness.
- Claims handling (10%): Fair and efficient claims handling is one of the most important factors to consider when you’re evaluating your car insurance needs. To assess this metric, we look at third-party evaluations from J.D. Power, CRASH Network, AM Best, Moody’s and others sources that provide insight into insurers’ track records of fulfilling claims.
