For over a century, AAA has provided roadside services to its members, covering everything from flat tires to jump-starts to lockouts. While AAA is perhaps best known for these services, its offerings extend beyond roadside — including auto, life, and home insurance.

Based on our industry research at AutoInsurance.com, we have found that AAA insurance is a good choice if you’re already a AAA member. You’ll get a discount on your auto insurance, best-in-class roadside assistance, and other perks. On the other hand, if you’re already a member of another auto club, or if you want to shop online, AAA probably isn’t right for you. The company is also limiting its insurance coverage in Florida, so customers in the state may want to look elsewhere.

In addition to being a senior editor and analyst at AutoInsurance.com, I’ve also been a AAA member for nearly a decade. While I was servicing my car with AAA, I spoke with an insurance agent and got a quote. I’ll share my personal experience — along with research and third-party data — to help you decide whether AAA is a good option for you.

At a Glance: AAA’s Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Best-in-class roadside assistance

  • Work with a local agent

  • Discounts for AAA members

  • Additional benefits, like 10% off labor for repairs and maintenance at AAA facilities

Cons

  • Rates, coverages, and customer satisfaction vary widely by region

  • Often requires membership to purchase

Is AAA Insurance Right for You?

On average, AAA’s prices are higher than the national average, especially for drivers with high-risk designations, so I would explore further only if you have a good credit score, no prior accidents or DUIs, and are already a AAA member.

The agent I spoke to explained that AAA’s membership discount takes into account longevity — in other words, the longer you’ve been a member, the greater your discount and the lower your premium will be.

PRO TIP:

If you have AAA through a household membership but you want to buy your own membership (for example, you’re on your parents’ membership but you move out), ask AAA to transfer your membership years. That way, you maintain your longevity for any discounts.

Consider AAA If You:

  • Have good credit and a clean driving history
  • Already hold AAA membership
  • Want to work with a local agent

AAA Probably Isn’t Best If You:

  • Have an at-fault accident, DUI conviction, or bad credit
  • Want to get a quote or purchase your policy online
Driver profileAAA average annual rate for full coverageNational average annual rate for full coverage
Good driver with good credit$3,009$2,356

Driver with bad credit$4,773$4,126
Drivers with a speeding ticket$3,531$2,730

How Much Do You Pay for AAA Insurance?

On average, the cost of full coverage with AAA is $251 monthly ($3,009 annually), and the cost of minimum coverage is $90 monthly ($1,080 annually). AAA’s full coverage prices are higher than the national average, but as I mentioned, you may pay less if you’re a longtime AAA member.

Keep in mind that because AAA sells insurance through regional companies, rates can vary significantly depending on your location.

Insights from Real AAA Policyholders

In addition to sharing my personal experiences with AAA, we analyzed real-life customer feedback and review patterns to understand what other drivers think. By analyzing over hundreds of customer reviews from major platforms like Reddit, Trustpilot, and more, we identified common themes in customer satisfaction, complaints, and overall experience. Here’s what we found:

CategorySummary
Approximate # Reviews Analyzed~10,000 (aggregated from Trustpilot ~3.8k, ConsumerAffairs ~3.1k, WalletHub ~1k, BBB regional complaints & Reddit sampling).
Top 3 Positives
  • Roadside assistance (including skilled technicians) & membership perks
  • Discounts/competitive pricing for some drivers
  • Helpful local agents / easy sign-up (in many regions)
Top 3 Negatives
  • Billing/refund issues
  • Customer service/communication (long hold times, difficulty reaching agent)
  • Claims delays/regional inconsistency
SummaryCustomer feedback on AAA varies significantly by region. Many customers praise AAA for reliable roadside assistance, strong membership perks, and competitive pricing or discounts in certain areas.

Complaints often center on customer service responsiveness, billing or membership issues, and slow or inconsistent claims handling.

Because AAA insurance is administered by independent regional clubs, customer experiences can differ widely depending on location and local underwriting practices.

Inside AAA: My Experience Shopping for a Policy

Recently, I went to AAA for routine maintenance on my car (AAA members get 10 percent off labor for maintenance and repairs), and while I waited, I spoke to an agent about insurance. AAA also provides quotes by phone (I wasn’t able to get an online quote), but since I was already there, an in-person conversation was more convenient.

I didn’t have an appointment, but the agent saw me within 10 minutes of my arrival. We reviewed my existing coverages, and she walked me through my quote. She also offered several insights that were new to me. For example, she encouraged me to keep my high levels of coverage — not only because it will protect my financial assets in the event of an accident, but also because insurance carriers view people who maintain high levels of coverage as lower risk, which can save you money. It’s something to consider when deciding between full coverage and liability-only coverage.

The agent also offered insight into property insurance and recommended coverages, and I spoke to another agent at the location about life insurance.

I decided to stay with State Farm because my policy just renewed and is slightly less expensive than the AAA quote. However, I had an excellent quote experience with AAA, and I will consider the company for my future insurance needs. (The car maintenance work was great too.)

TIP:

If you bring your car to AAA for maintenance, look for coupons and discounts online ahead of time. I was able to save an additional 10 percent through coupons.

AAA Customer Satisfaction Data

Unlike other insurance companies, AAA sells auto insurance through regional companies that operate independently. That means each company holds its own individual customer service scores and rankings. Each company also offers different coverages and discounts, which is why it’s worth talking to a local agent to find out which company will underwrite your policy.

Below, I’ve broken down the available data on customer service for different providers. Auto Club of Southern California, CSAA Insurance Group, and Automobile Club Group are three of the larger AAA insurance companies. AAA Texas is a smaller regional company, and therefore often not included in national studies.

Overall, AAA companies for which we have data tend to perform well on customer service metrics, which is consistent with my own experience. In other words, as far as the data shows, customer service and claims with AAA insurance are solid.

What Coverages I Included in My AAA Quote

AAA sells all the typical auto insurance coverages: bodily injury and property damage liability, medical payments, personal injury protection (where available), uninsured/underinsured motorist, comprehensive, and collision.

I got quotes for the following coverages, all of which I hold on my current policy. The state I live in requires only bodily injury, property damage, and medical payments; however, I chose additional coverages and higher limits to protect myself in the event of a serious accident. I recommend getting coverage above the minimum, which the AAA agent affirmed.

If you get a quote with AAA, your payments will likely look different from mine. The cost of auto insurance is based on unique factors, like vehicle type, age, driving history, and location.

CoverageWhat it coversLimits/deductibleHow much it added to my quote
Bodily injury liabilityThe other party’s injuries in an accident$100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident$68 per month
Property damage liabilityDamage you cause to another party’s property in an accident$100,000$39 per month
Medical paymentsInjuries to your party in an accident$5,000$9 per month
Underinsured motoristYour and your party’s injuries if someone who doesn’t have enough insurance hits you$100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident$13 per month
Uninsured motoristYour and your party’s injuries if an uninsured motorist hits you (including hit-and-runs)$100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident$6 per month

ComprehensiveDamage to your vehicle caused by something other than a collision, like theft, fire, or a windstorm$250 deductible$54 per month

In addition to standard coverages, AAA offers the following extras. Keep in mind that each AAA regional provider offers different coverage, so speak to an agent to find out exactly what’s available.

CoverageWhat it coversHow much it added to my quote
Rental reimbursementA rental if your car is in the shop after a covered loss$3.33 per month for $50 daily reimbursement (up to $1,500)
Special equipment coverageLoss or damage of permanently installed equipment, like a stereoIncluded complimentary in policy, up to $500 reimbursement
Gap insurance for financed or leased vehiclesThe difference between what you owe and the value of your car in the event of a total lossNot included
New-car replacementA replacement vehicle if your new car (under three years old) is a total lossNot included

Roadside assistance is included in your AAA membership, which you usually need in order to purchase AAA insurance. I’ve been a AAA member for nine years, and I have used its roadside services a handful of times, mostly for dead batteries and flat tires. In my experience, a AAA technician has arrived within 30 to 60 minutes of my call, and I’ve always had positive experiences, both with the phone operators and the technicians.

How You Can Save on Your AAA Policy

The AAA agent I spoke to gave me a couple tips on how to save on your policy.

Like I mentioned earlier, the longer you’re a AAA member, the more you’ll save. Typically, you’ll see the highest savings when you’ve been a member for three to five years. Remember, if you’re on an existing AAA household membership (for example, your parents’ membership) and you get your own membership (for example, because you move), make sure AAA transfers your membership years.

Additionally, shopping early will save you money. Get a quote at least eight days before the policy start date. You will get a discount, and you will ensure you have enough time to gather necessary paperwork.

In addition, AAA offers the following discounts. Availability varies between independent, regional providers.

  • Auto and home: This discount combines home insurance with auto insurance and is good for up to 15 percent savings on auto insurance and 20 percent off on home insurance.
  • Auto and condo: The auto and condo discount allows condo owners to save up to 10 percent on auto insurance and 20 percent on condo insurance when combining policies.
  • Auto and renters: If you combine auto insurance with renters insurance, you can save up to four percent on auto insurance and 20 percent on your renters policy.
  • Multi-vehicle: AAA’s multi-vehicle discount allows drivers to save up to 27 percent on select coverage.
  • Paid in full: When you pay your policy in full, you can save 5 percent.
  • AAA membership: AAA auto club members get a five percent discount on select coverage.
  • Telematics: Get a discount for tracking your driving with the AAA app.

How to Take Full Advantage of AAA’s Mobile App

AAA has one app for all of its services. You can use the app to manage your policy, file a claim, download proof of insurance, and get a quote.

I also discovered several useful non-insurance features in the app, including requesting roadside assistance, finding nearby gas stations, and browsing discounts. To make the most out of your AAA membership, take advantage of the club’s numerous discounts, many of which are travel-related.

AAA also has two different apps, which can be confusing for customers. The AAA app you use depends on your location since it has regional companies. Upon opening, the app will direct you to type in your zip code, so if you reside in an area that isn’t eligible for that particular AAA app, it will direct you to download the other one.

AAA’s app is highly rated in the App Store and on Google Play. My only criticism is that some of the app’s functionalities, including finding an agent and getting a quote, take place in a web browser rather than being integrated within the app itself.

Methodology - Why You Can Trust Our Reviews

At AutoInsurance.com, we assess auto insurance providers using four main criteria:

  • Price (40 percent): We evaluate average premiums for both full and minimum coverage, factoring in profiles of good drivers with strong credit, as well as drivers with DUIs, accidents, or low credit scores. Available discounts are also considered. Full coverage rates are calculated based on the following limits:
    • Bodily injury liability: $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident
    • Property damage liability: $50,000 per accident
    • Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury: $50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident
    • Comprehensive and collision: $500 deductible
  • Claims Handling (25 percent): A quality claims process is timely, transparent, and fair, with efficient communication, proper damage assessments, and prompt resolution or payment. We evaluate claims handling through resources like the CRASH Network Insurer Report Card, J.D. Power’s Claims Satisfaction Report, and financial strength ratings from AM Best and S&P. When possible, we also incorporate real customer experiences.
  • Customer Experience (25 percent): We look at the ease of navigating the customer experience, from obtaining a quote to managing a policy and accessing documents. The evaluation includes both online and agent interactions, as well as the functionality of websites and mobile apps. Sources like J.D. Power, the NAIC complaint index, BBB ratings, and app store reviews contribute to our analysis.
  • Coverage Options (10 percent): We examine each insurer’s range of coverage options, prioritizing those that go beyond the minimum state requirements. Additional features like roadside assistance, accident forgiveness, gap coverage, and rideshare protection are considered valuable.

The customer insight analysis was conducted using a combination of AI-assisted review aggregation and human editorial oversight. Approximately 10,000 firsthand customer reviews and complaints were collected from public platforms including Trustpilot, ConsumerAffairs, WalletHub, Better Business Bureau listings, and Reddit discussions. Only direct customer experiences were included; professional reviews and affiliate publications were excluded. Final theme selection, summaries, and conclusions were reviewed and refined by an editor.

FAQ: What Others Are Asking About AAA Insurance

The typical AAA membership includes roadside assistance (services like towing, flat-tire changes, and jump-starts) and AAA club discounts; it does not include auto insurance. AAA sells its insurance policies — including auto, home, umbrella, and life insurance — separately, though often you must be a member in order to purchase AAA insurance.

AAA auto insurance can be more expensive than other providers for several reasons. First, AAA policies are often underwritten by third-party insurance companies, which can contribute to higher premiums. Additionally, car insurance costs have risen across the industry due to factors like inflation, natural disasters, and an increase in car accidents.

AAA also invests in high-quality customer service, which can add to the cost. Plus, insurance rates vary by location, and AAA’s pricing may be higher in certain states due to local risk factors, claims history, and regulatory requirements. Your personal factors—such as driving record, credit history, and the type of coverage you choose—also play a role in determining your premium.

If AAA’s rates seem high, consider comparing quotes from other insurers or adjusting your coverage options to better fit your budget. Some drivers prioritize excellent service and member benefits, while others may prefer a more basic policy from another provider.

AAA operates a little differently than other insurance companies in that it sells auto insurance through separate, regional AAA companies. Each company offers different coverages and discounts, and limited information is available online, meaning you will need to speak to an agent to learn about a policy. AAA is technically an umbrella organization, serving as a federation (or association) for individual, regional clubs. That’s where AAA gets its name — American Automobile Association.

Each AAA club serves a different area. For example, I’m a member of AAA Club Alliance. If you live in Los Angeles, you’d be a member of the Auto Club of Southern California.

Each regional club operates independently and sells insurance through different insurance agencies. For example, CSAA Insurance Group is one of the largest AAA insurers, selling insurance to members of over a dozen AAA clubs. If you live in Northern California, Nevada, Utah, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, or Arizona, you’ll buy insurance from AAA Northern California. If you’re from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, or Rhode Island, you’ll buy from AAA Northeast, and so on. AAA sells auto insurance in every state; Washington, D.C.; Puerto Rico; and the Virgin Islands.

It may be a bit complicated, but it’s important to understand so that you know what company is underwriting your insurance and who is responsible if you have a claim.

Allstate’s premiums are lower compared to AAA. Allstate offers policies that are 16 percent cheaper for full coverage and 26 percent cheaper for minimum coverage. You’ll pay an annual average of $2,605 at Allstate and $3,014 at AAA for full coverage, and $840 at Allstate and $1,056 for minimum coverage. However, you may find cheaper rates depending on your local AAA club. The best way to find out how much you’ll pay is to get a quote with each company.
