GEICO has some of the cheapest minimum coverage car insurance in Colorado and has competitive rates for full coverage as well. It offers a variety of discounts, including for military members, federal employees, and members of certain professional societies and educational institutions.
One more unique coverage offered by GEICO is mechanical breakdown insurance (MBI), which covers repairs from vehicle breakdowns, replacement parts, and other mechanical issues. Your car is eligible if it’s new or leased, less than 15 months old, and has less than 15,000 miles on it. Once you add MBI to your policy, you can renew it for up to 100,000 miles or seven years, whichever comes sooner, which can help you save on repairs over time.

For those interested in participating in a telematics discount program, American Family has two: one for safe driving (DriveMyWay) and one for driving less than average (MilesMyWay). The former provides savings of between 10 and 35 percent but could increase rates for high-risk drivers, while the latter provides savings of up to 25 percent for driving fewer than 8,000 miles per year.

Power’s U.S. Auto Insurance Study for the Southwest region, and it also ranked first for usage-based insurance. In addition, it ranked first for service in the Digital Experience Study1, making it ideal for drivers who value being able to seamlessly manage their policies online.
One of Nationwide’s two telematics options is a pay-per-mile program called SmartMiles. Unlike programs like American Family’s, which provide a flat discount for driving under a certain threshold, Nationwide’s pay-per-mile policy charges you based on how much you drive each month. The less you drive, the more you save.

For the nearly 4.5 million licensed drivers in Colorado, having auto insurance is a legal requirement. Colorado state law requires the following minimum auto insurance limits:
Minimum coverage limits are the lowest limits required to legally drive in the state, but if you can afford to, you should get more coverage. If you get into a serious accident, minimum coverage likely won’t cover the damages, and you’ll be on the hook for the difference. If you want to cover damage to your own car as well, you’ll want to add full coverage, which includes comprehensive and collision coverage.

In general, you need to register and insure your car in Colorado after you move from out of state. You should get your license within 30 days of moving to Colorado and register and insure your vehicle in the state within 90 days. If you’re visiting Colorado or have just recently moved, you can use out-of-state car insurance.
Colorado is an at-fault state, not a no-fault state. That means the state allows you to sue the responsible party in any circumstance in which you are hurt or your property is damaged due to a car accident. You are not required to have permanent or serious injuries to sue the responsible party after an auto accident.
As with most other states, auto insurance in Colorado is attached to the insured vehicle, not the driver. If you drive someone else’s vehicle and are in an accident, their auto insurance would be responsible. That said, your policy could become secondary insurance if its limits aren’t high enough to cover the total losses.
According to the 2022 Colorado Code § 42-4-1409, the consequences for not having car insurance in Colorado are as follows:
| Offense | License suspension | Fine minimum |
|---|---|---|
| First | Yes, until you can prove you have auto insurance | $500 |
| Second | Yes, for 4 months | $1,000 |
| Third and subsequent | Yes, for 8 months | $1,000 |
