The Pelican State (or as some call it, the Bayou State) is home to over 3.4 million licensed drivers and encompasses nearly 64,000 miles of public roads. Louisiana drivers pay $251 monthly, on average, for a full coverage auto insurance policy — 26 percent over the national average.
A number of factors contribute to these above-average costs, including a large number of high-risk drivers. However, insurance is not optional — it’s required by law, and you’ll need coverage for any new car registrations in Louisiana. Whether you’re looking for full coverage, minimum coverage, or qualify as a high-risk driver, we’ve researched insurers in Louisiana to help you find a policy that’s the right fit.

Known for strong customer service, State Farm has over 60 locations in Louisiana. Its rates are competitive, particularly for drivers who want to purchase more than the minimum required insurance in Louisiana, which we recommend doing.
State Farm ranks above average for customer satisfaction in the southeast region in J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, with a score of 673 (for reference, the region average is 663). State Farm is generally known for having great customer service, especially among major national insurers.
The company works with a robust network of local agents across the country to deliver personalized support and assistance to customers. In fact, it does not allow for policies to be purchased online, only through an agent. While this may be a downside for some drivers, it helps ensure that you get the coverage you need that fits within your budget and allows policyholders to discuss any questions or concerns they have with an experienced professional.
State Farm also offers the following discounts to customers in Louisiana to help bring down the cost of premiums:
If you drive for Uber, Lyft, or another rideshare company (including food delivery), we recommend adding rideshare coverage to your policy. State Farm offers rideshare coverage in 43 states, including Louisiana. It covers you when the rideshare company’s insurance doesn’t:
Coverage | App on, waiting for passenger | Matched with passenger | Passenger in vehicle |
---|---|---|---|
Bodily injury and property damage liability coverage | State Farm | Rideshare company | Rideshare company |
Medical payments coverage | State Farm | State Farm | State Farm |
Comprehensive, collision, emergency road service, and rental reimbursement | State Farm | State Farm | State Farm |
It’s strong coverage, considering some insurers don’t offer any protection once you’ve matched with a passenger or are transporting them.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
In Louisiana, Lyft requires vehicles to be a 2009 model or newer.2 Uber requires a 16-year-old vehicle or newer.3
If you qualify, USAA is an excellent choice for auto insurance in Louisiana. In particular, it stands out for its competitive car insurance rates, exceptional roadside assistance offering, and discounts.
Louisiana is home to over 15,000 active-duty military members and over 17,000 spouses and dependents, plus nearly 19,000 National Guard and reserve members and their 20,000 spouses and dependents.4 These individuals, as well as veterans and their families, are eligible for USAA auto insurance.
USAA’s prices are competitive, and it offers the following auto coverages:
One of the offerings we like the most from USAA is its roadside assistance, which covers the following:
If you have roadside assistance on your policy, you won’t pay out of pocket for these services. USAA distinguishes itself in that even if you don’t hold coverage, you can call its roadside assistance services and will pay a special negotiated rate, typically less than you would if you contacted the service provider directly.
In addition to providing services domestically, you can call roadside assistance in Canada, Mexico (within 75 miles of the border), U.S. territories, and the base country where a policy is issued.
USAA claims that its members save an average of $725 annually, or $60 per month, when they switch from other providers. You can save on auto insurance from USAA with the following discounts:
GOOD TO KNOW:
Louisiana requires all auto insurers in the state to provide a discount of 25 percent to active duty military members. Even if you decide not to go with USAA, you will be able to benefit from lower rates from your chosen insurer if you qualify, so keep this in mind.
One of Progressive’s advantages is the number of coverage and add-on options it offers, which you may not find everywhere. Additionally, its accident forgiveness perks make it a good choice for Louisianians who want to avoid rate increases following an at-fault accident.
As a major insurer, Progressive offers all typical coverages like liability, medical payments, roadside assistance, rental reimbursement, comprehensive and collision. It also offers the following additional coverages and add-ons.
Policy add-on | Details |
---|---|
Rideshare coverage | If you drive for Uber, Lyft, or another service, the rideshare company’s insurance usually does not cover you unless you are transporting a passenger. Progressive’s rideshare coverage protects you when the rideshare company doesn’t. |
Diminishing deductible | If you add this to your policy, Progressive will reduce your collision or comprehensive deductible by $50 for every six-month period without a violation or claim. |
Loan/lease payoff | This coverage, also called gap coverage, will help cover the difference between what you owe on a car loan or lease and the car’s value if it’s stolen or totaled. Progressive will cover up to 25% of its actual cash value. |
Pet injury coverage | This is included as part of collision coverage and does not cost extra. If you get into an accident with your pet in your car, Progressive will cover up to $1,000 worth of vet bills. |
Trip interruption coverage | This is available as an add-on to roadside assistance and applies if your car breaks down more than 100 miles away from home. Progressive will pay up to $500 for related costs, including lodging, transportation, and food. |
In Louisiana, auto insurance premiums increase by an average of 42 percent following an at-fault accident. Luckily, Progressive’s accident forgiveness coverage will prevent your premium from increasing after an accident. You can purchase this coverage as a policy add-on, and Progressive also offers it for free to drivers who have been customers for at least five years with no accidents or violations.
Louisiana is home to big universities like Louisiana State University and Tulane University, as well as smaller schools like Loyola University New Orleans. Whether you’re a student at one of these schools or another, or still in high school, you may be able to earn one or both of Progressive’s student discounts.
To qualify for a student discount from Progressive, you must:
When you’re shopping for car insurance in Louisiana, make sure you’ve compared quotes from multiple car insurance companies. The cheapest car insurance company for you may not be the most affordable option for someone in another ZIP code.
Southern Farm Bureau is one of the insurance companies affiliated with the American Farm Bureau Federation. In general, Farm Bureau companies are known for offering affordable rates and specialized service to policyholders in their respective states. In order to purchase an insurance policy from Southern Farm Bureau, you must be a Farm Bureau member, which comes with an annual fee.
Southern Farm Bureau consistently offers some of the cheapest auto insurance rates in Louisiana. It came out on top as the cheapest option for most driver categories in our pricing data, apart from drivers with low credit, where it came in second. Here’s an overview of its rates for different driver profiles and how they compare to the state averages:
Farm Bureau Average Annual Rate | Percent Below State Average | |
---|---|---|
Full Coverage | $1,952 | -35% |
Minimum Coverage | $754 | -32% |
Teens | $4,477 | -42% |
Speeding Ticket | $1,967 | -47% |
Accident | $2,407 | -24% |
DUI | $2,450 | -52% |
Poor Credit | $3,021 | -42% |
Southern Farm Bureau offers policyholders the option to participate in the Farm Bureau telematics program, called DriveDown. This works a bit differently than most other popular telematics programs as it doesn’t provide a discount on your insurance premium but rather allows drivers to save on their deductible if they drive safely.
Like other telematics programs, DriveDown tracks your driving habits using a mobile app — you’ll first need to download the free MobileAgent app to sign up using your name, driver’s license number, and cell phone number. You’ll then receive a link to download the Routely app, which will actually track your trips.
Farm Bureau doesn’t advertise the maximum rewards for DriveDown, but you will automatically earn a 5 percent reward after taking your first trip. After that, rewards are calculated every 30 days. The next time you file a claim, your deductible will be lowered by the amount of the rewards you earned, saving you money. In addition, filing a claim doesn’t change your rewards, so the reward percentage will stay at the level you’ve earned for future claims as well.
Founded in 1991, Direct Auto insures high-risk drivers. If you have an SR-22 or hold a high-risk designation for another reason, Direct Auto is much more likely to insure you than standard insurers. Though it specializes in high-risk policies, Direct offers discounts and flexible payment options that keep premiums affordable.
On average, Louisiana drivers are more likely to fall into certain high-risk categories than drivers in other states. Take a look at the following statistics about driving in Louisiana:
GOOD TO KNOW:
The high-risk designation doesn’t necessarily imply poor driving; age, credit score, and location can also affect the risk level an insurer assigns.
The following factors can contribute to a high-risk designation:
Insurers can deny coverage for high-risk drivers (or effectively deny coverage by quoting an exorbitant rate), and many standard providers do. However, Direct Auto specializes in high-risk coverage. It can help you get an affordable policy with flexible payment options if you fall into a high-risk category.
High-risk insurance often costs more than standard insurance. For example, after a DUI conviction, insurance premiums in Louisiana increase by 71 percent on average. Direct Auto offers an array of discount options that can help you keep insurance costs affordable:
Discount | Potential savings |
---|---|
Active military | 25% |
Safe driver (accident- and violation-free for 36 months) | 10% |

55 years or older and complete an accident prevention course | 5% |
Track your driving with the Routely app | 10% |
Under 21 and complete a state-approved driver education course, or any age and complete an accident prevention course | 10% |
Multiple vehicles insured on the same policy | 25% |
Vehicle equipped with anti-theft and safety features | 10% |
Buy another product from Direct Auto (e.g., emergency protection plan) | 5% |
Hold prior coverage with another company for at least 6 months with no more than a 90-day lapse | 25% |
Own a home, townhome, or condo where you keep your car(s) | 15% |
Return to Direct after at least six months of not holding a policy with the company | 6% |
Active member of an affinity organization | 5% |
Automatic payments, pay in full, or paperless billing | 9% |

Affordable insurance isn’t just about the amount you pay each month, but also when and how you pay. Direct Auto offers several payment options to help align your insurance costs and your budget. You can customize the following to your needs:
At AutoInsurance.com, we evaluate auto insurance providers in Louisiana based on four key factors:

You cannot go to jail for not having insurance in Louisiana because that is considered an infraction rather than a misdemeanor. However, driving without insurance incurs significant fees. The fine is $100 for the first offense, $250 for the second, and $500 for the third. It can also increase your insurance premiums.
Unfortunately, some insurers are no longer doing business in Louisiana in part due to substantial losses from weather events like Hurricane Ida. United Property and Casualty Insurance Company, a homeowner insurance company based in Florida, stopped renewing its home insurance policies in 2023. Farmers Insurance also pulled out of the homeowners market. In the past, Allstate dropped wind and hail coverage for certain policyholders in the state.
If an officer catches you driving without insurance, you have three days to provide proof, or you will have to pay a fine.
You can only self-insure in Louisiana if you own a fleet of at least 26 vehicles in your name. You must also own property in Louisiana, have total assets worth at least $100,000 (after deducting mortgages and other payments chargeable to the property), and have no canceled self-insurance certificates from the past five years.
