How many car accidents happen in Dallas?

Dallas has one of the highest rates of traffic fatalities among large U.S. cities. In 2024, there were approximately 28,000 car crashes in Dallas, resulting in 210 fatalities. While this number is a decrease from 2023, which saw an estimated 35,000 crashes, it is still high. Loop 12 is one of Dallas’ most dangerous roadways. In 2024, there were 25 deaths on Loop 12. As of May 2025, there have been 5 deaths on Loop 12.5

In 2022, Dallas City Council approved the Vision Zero plan with the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and reducing serious injuries by 50 percent by 2030. Strategies for this plan include infrastructure improvements and targeted enforcement of speeding and distracted driving.

SAFETY FIRST:

Texas has high speed limits, with maximum speed limits reaching as high as 85 mph on certain highways. Part of Dallas’ Vision Zero Initiative to reduce traffic fatalities include lowering speed limits on dangerous roadways. The speed limit on part of Loop 12 was reduced from 45 mph to 40 mph.

Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements in Texas

Known as the 30/60/25 rule, drivers are required to carry the following minimum insurance in Texas:

  • $30,000 in bodily injury liability per person
  • $60,000 in bodily injury liability per accident
  • $25,000 in property damage liability coverage6

Texas is an at-fault state, which means that the driver who is at-fault holds the legal responsibility to pay for the damages. Texas car insurance laws mandate that personal injury protection be included in every Texas car insurance policy, but drivers can reject it in writing.

FAQs

State Farm, USAA, and Texas Farm Bureau offer a good balance of price and service in Dallas. These companies all offer below-average rates in Dallas for full and minimum coverage, and score highly on third-party ratings of customer and claims satisfaction. Texas Farm Bureau ($127 monthly) and State Farm ($143 monthly) have the cheapest average rates for full coverage. State Farm ($56 monthly) and USAA ($67 monthly) have the cheapest average rates for minimum coverage.

Insurance companies consider many different factors, including your age, driving record, credit history, type of car, and zip code to calculate your insurance rate. Drivers with a clean driving history are considered lower risk than drivers with a DUI or speeding ticket on their record, and as a result enjoy lower rates. Along the same lines, teens typically pay higher premiums due to their lack of experience, which is considered a high risk.

Dallas is densely populated and experiences a high rate of theft, vandalism, and hit-and-run accidents. It is also prone to severe weather events, like tornadoes, hail, windstorms, and occasional flooding. Due to these risk factors, Dallas drivers often face higher rates because insurance companies consider them more likely to file claims.
